Yeah you need to make sure the seller transfers the Applecare into your name:

"Transfer of Plan
You may transfer this Plan to a new owner of the Covered Equipment. If you purchased the Plan in the U.S. or Canada, transfer by sending written notice to AppleCare Administration, P.O. Box 149125, Austin, TX 78714-9125, U.S. You must provide the Plan’s enrollment or agreement number, the serial numbers of the Covered Equipment being transferred, proof of purchase of the Plan, and the name and address of the new owner."

Yeah you're gonna love it Zerimar.

Synergy, control iTunes from the menu bar and system-wide keyboard shortcuts, as well as show the currently playing track in a transparent bezel on the screen with album info and cover art: http://wincent.com/a/products/synergy-classic/

iSale, eBay auction manager and such. It integrates with iPhoto to make adding images to auctions a breeze. You can also have it automatically upload everything to a .Mac account for online storage, etc. There is even a Widget to track your auctions. It's pretty slick. http://www.equinux.com/us/products/isale/index.html

Sidenote, puts a 1-pixel wide border on the side of your screen, then when you mouse over it it pops out and you can keep notes there, out of the way. I use it to jot down phone numbers quickly and things like that: http://www.chatelp.org/?s=Sidenote

VLC, plays basically any video format ever. .AVI, .OGM, anything: http://www.videolan.org/

Deker, thanks for the info. I'm going to look all that up in a minute, but this machine just got here. So I fired it up, and I have problem number one. It wants to "Select a Wireless Service" and no matter what I do, it won't take any information. So what do I do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't get past this screen cuz it's asking me for a group to join and password, which I don't know what it wants.

Thanks!

It's just looking for a wireless network to connect to. If you don't have one there should be a skip button or something. If not, try pressing Apple + Q to skip the optional part of the setup guide.

Deker,

It didn't have a skip button on there and it only had a "go back" button but it would only go so far back. So I hit the button that said that I didn't have an internet connection and figured I could add it later. Then it asked for my personal information, and I guess it was trying to find a way to connect to register the computer.

So anyway, it set up an account and then it told me "once you connect don't forget to register your apple computer" or something like that.

The guy who shipped it also sent me the Apple Care warranty, I'm going to email him as I don't think it was ever activated, but I'll have to check if that happened or not. In the meantime I'm going to see what I can set up and see how far I can get into playing with this thing. Thanks for your time and I will definitely check the links you posted.

Cheers!

that makes sense, it basically wants to set up an account for you initially, even if you're not connected, for use with e-mail, etc. from your description I didn't realize that's the screen you were on, glad you got it all figured out.

so any thoughts so far?

Chris,

I made it through the screen and I was playing with it last night. The thing is sheer beauty. I didn't want to hop back on my pc anymore. Man, that mac is sweet. I'm just...wow!

Only problem is I couldn't connect to my internet wirelessly because they shipped the wrong modem, so now I have to wait for them to reship and it'll be here until Monday or so, but in the meantime, I'll have to look at programs I need to get to put on this machine.

Another thing is ths, and maybe Deker can shed some light as well. I emailed the guy that sold this to me and asked about the Apple Care Warranty and he wrote this:

1. No, I never registered the AppleCare warranty.
2. As far as the original receipt goes, the system was provided as part of a community college class and no receipt was provided.

Please let me know if you have any problems with getting registered. I’ll do whatever I can to assist. Thanks.

So does that mean I get to be the first to register the warranty as the owner and will I have to show some proof of purchase or what, cuz he sent me the box with the paper work in it. Any help on this would be great...but this machine is just WOW!

Cheers!

welcome to the club

and that sounds odd to be honest, not that he didn't sign up for applecare as that's no biggie, but i personally wouldn't get a $2700 machine without a reciept. but hey, maybe that's just me i imagine dek can fill you in a bit more on what might be needed there to get things registered.

as far as software deker gave you a pretty good list. i use a few not on there (and i'm going to check out a few that he mentioned that i wasn't familiar with), i do some HTML/XML editing in hyperedit, there's also a sweet little program called iSnip that lets you quickly store bits of text that you can access via an icon on your top menu bar. one other cool one is slim battery monitor, its an alternative battery/system monitor that works really well.

Fig,

Thanks for the information and the links you posted, they're very helpful and as soon as my modem arrives and I connect to the internet I'll be sure to download those apps.

But I'm wondering about that applecare warranty. I was going to call the apple store today but ran out of time and I'm thinking about just driving down there right now and seeing if I can get some information on that.

Deker, what's your take on this. Will I be able to use that applecare warranty, and can I just register it online or how will it I go about doing this? Any information would be great. Thanks a lot for the help guys, the more I play with the machine, the more I'm lovin' it man...

Cheers!

If he hasn't registered the applecare just go to www.apple.com/support and on the right side is a link to enroll in applecare. Then you'll just need the enrollment number inside the box, and the serial number of your machine.

The easiest way to get your serial number is to click on the Apple in the upper left corner, then About this Mac. Then where it says Version 10.4.x, click on those words twice, and it will show your serial number.

Chris & Deker,

I hope you guys are having a great Thanksgiving. You guys have been a ton of help and I'm still playing with the machine. Thanks Deker for leading me to the support link on Apple's site. I'll get to it as soon as I can, after this holiday is over. Lots of friends and family over right now, so I'm chillin'.

But I'll have more questions, however, I'm looking into taking a class at the Apple store this Saturday if I can get out there, but it's in one of the major malls here in San Diego, so I know it's going to be jam packed and all. But thanks again guys, I'll definitely be back, because I'd like to know how the structure is as far as storing files and what not...so I want to get used to it before I really put anything on it.

On a side note, I'm planning to hook up Photoshop CS on it, since that's what I have. But can I transfer my brushes from my pc to the mac or is that different, and is every brush set compatible with CS from Photoshop 7? Thanks again, you guys are the best.

Cheers!
