As for what i dislike about the Bush administration - this new immigration policy, have you heard of it? Ever illegal immigrant (an estimated 13 million) currently living in the US will be given a 3 year working visa. This is much like those who choose to legalize marijuana only because it would be dificult to enforce the status quo. Personally, i think a better choice would be to hunt the criminals down and bus them out of our nation, at gun point if need be. Then again, i'm pretty crazy.

You're not crazy. I've got the same beef. Though it's not enough for me to NOT vote for Bush, it does make me second guess.

Not all that crazy. This plan isn't all that crazy either. Think about it. "Come get a free hot fudge sundae... just give us your name and address." They'd at least know who they are and where they are (3 years ago). Make 'em legal and they have to pay taxes, then in 3 years--make 'em illegal again and deport their wetbacks!

...are we off on another tangent?

Hey Nostalgia:
Sorry about that comment earlier. You have certainly proven yourself worthy of arguing your case. From your first couple of posts, however, it seemed like you were doing more harm than good, which really pissed me off. It almost sounded like you were putting down other nations in order to protect the argument of your own, and I didn't think that was fair at all. I have lived overseas for 5 years now, and I have offended many a person in just the same way by a simple mistake of the tongue, and afterwards I feel terrible. So once again, I apologize.

Not trying to stereotype anyone but it’s a pretty well known fact that a lot of these people who come across the border illegally end up doing jobs that nobody really wants to do anyways.

My only beef is that a good majority of these people working illegally don’t have to pay any taxes like everyone else. Doesn’t seem fair to me. Especially since the tax payers are essentially paying for these people to attend school and get medical treatment.

OK, now back to the horsepower talk:

It's weird how the Japanese can tickle 600 BHP from a 2 litre engine, when you need 6 litres for the same power. And we all know US engineers aren't stupid.

Paav, our US mechanics have no problem pushing their V8's to 1400 horsepower. It's not economical to put that in a production car, just like it would never make any sense to put a 600HP 2liter engine in a car. It's easy as hell. I don't doubt that the US engineers could make that number double easily.

Paavo, if you ever decide to come over to the States again, I'll hook you up to drive a 1200HP 1967 Corvette Stingray. It's completely different than any 4-banger, no matter how many horsepower that little beast has got.

Yeah mattboy, I know that they're different. And I was saying that just to make a point about ordinary cars being huge and using way too much gasoline per mile. Sportcars are a different thing all together. But if it becomes the "standard" to own a huge SUV just to pick up your kids, as it more or less is there, that's when it's bad.

I'm against those road-monsters as much as anybody, but my car is a gas-hog-from-hell. I'm lucky to get 14MPG in town.

In Los Angeles or Miami it's pointless to own a big SUV, but here in northern Iowa it's necessary in the winter. If you didn't have something that was 4WD and could plow through 2 feet of snow you'd be in a bind. Pickup trucks and SUVs far outnumber cars around here, simply because of winter conditions.

Nobody wants those jobs because the employers know they can get illegals to do the work for $3.50/hour, so they aren't going to pay a legal worker minimum wage when they can pay an illegal half of that. It's not that people don't want the jobs, it's that the employers don't want to pay legal employees.

Nos.

I guess it’s hard to speak for the whole nation and what’s going on because I’m sure it’s different everywhere. But speaking about my own local politics here in the bay area, NOBODY wants to pick our food no matter what the pay is.

We have a big unemployment problem yet there’s lots of openings at Burger King for example but people don’t choose to work there accept the immigrants.
