Why? Its a discussion, and it's back under control. It's posts like this that destroy the integrity of the thread. Unless maybe it's just a nice excuse to get a persons post count higher

If you see the progression of the thread, it's far from beating a deadhorse. Closing the thread will only lead to another one being made later, or garbage posts made elsewhere. Let people talk.

Thanks for enlightening me a bit more on the softwood tariff issue. Although I won't back down from my stance that we do need to protect our own first, I don't think that we should put anybody else out of work doing it. Surely there is a compromise somewhere in between. I'll admit that we (America) place a lot of, from the country being affected's standpoint, unfair tariffs, embargoes, and sanctions to get what we want out of that country, but there is always a reason for us to do it. Whether or not that reason is fair from your point of view is a different story of course. We've had embargoes against Cuba and Iran since the Reagan Administration, and rightly so. I don't think even a slight bit that we are making the wrong decision there. No Democratic President has repealed those, so it's not simply a Republican point-of-view as many Liberals would like to say to get public attention. I know, I know, I went farther on this that we had discussed I think on this thread, sorry.

Well, now I feel like a total tool for being so aggresive in my softwood lumber reply. I wasn't attacking you mattboy, and I'm happy and feel refreshed by your comment. Very calm, cool, and understanding. I definately was heated at the insenitive remarks made yesterday by other members.

Anyways, I totally agree with you that a country needs to protect their own, and 100% there is a compromise in the middle here somewhere. It's tough in a debate like this, because you don't know if the other person is trying to see things from both sides of the coin. You just have to take your stance and hope no one points out the flaws in your arguement (or in this case, between two countries). I firmly believe the States are more at fault then Canada in this particular case (as with the Pacific Salmon Issue and the water diversion) but it's not cut and dry. I can't just point a finger and say "you cost us money and jobs" and expect the other guy to fold and say, "ok, you are right".

The key is the compromise, and it seems like ego's clash and it's always a tug of war for that 60-40 split. Cooler heads rarely seem to prevail, and in the case of the States, your stronger economy and influence more times then not put a dark cloud over this country. You also have to remember, you have a population of 300 million, Canada has one of 36 million, your economy can prosper that much more then ours.
