Look how long graphicsguy stayed out of this thread!! I'm so proud of myself....

but this, I couldn't pass up.

"And 96% of all design firms dont use macs."

He's right, only the good ones do.

(Yes, I'm biased. My G5 is supposed to arrive this weekend)

My only critique of the Washington post article is the windows administrator account. Majority of people (including myself.) just run as an administrator because it's easy and a no brainer.

While on other systems their is a big difference between 'root' (admin) and 'user' .... its built in. Imagine just using your *nix box as root all the time. That is what people do with windows.

Now he says its a fault of microsoft, when actually its a fault of the end user not being told otherwise. If you are on a forum for *nix distros and you say, " I was running IRC, with my cool new KDE3.1 Desktop as root..." you will get 500 threads about how that is the stupidest thing ou can do. So when you run as root you either $ sudo or you $ su to root and run the command or run the program. Now the same can be done with windows as well, you just right click and "Run as" and you run something as an admin, or you log out and install something as an admin and then return to a user. This would stop a majority of the viruses from installing if you didnt run as an admin. Its not the fault of windows, but no one tells you otherwise.

(and I am not saying Microsoft is not an easy target, because it is - lol....) It was really good of microsoft to default win2k3 as having all services shut off. I could never understand why they chose to have so many running, many are outdated and/or are not needed for desktops.

Sounds like you guys are all apologizing for microsoft to me. I read today that the SoBig virus alone has cost the country over 1 billion dollars in lost production time, repairs, upgrades, IT staff salaries, etc. My dad was hit with the SoBig, and was down for 2 days. Before that he was down two days from the MSBlast worm. He is too busy actually working and trying to make money to **** around with Windows trying to keep it updated and patched every week. And it's only him in the business, so it's not like he can afford to hire an IT guy to maintain his network of 2 computers. That's 4 out of 10 working days that he has been down in the past two weeks alone. With the amount of money he's lost in those 4 days of downtime, he could have paid for a brand new Mac that wouldn't have been affected, and he could be working 24/7 if he wanted too. Windows is cheaper my ass.

Yes it's technically the user's fault for opening an email or not reading an 800 page manual to learn how to secure their copy of Windows, but you can't let Microsoft off the hook saying that they "learn from their mistakes" after what, 10 years, and 4 versions of Windows? The analogy that John makes about plumbing in the first article I posted is priceless and dead-on in my opinion.

There's another great post on http://www.textbased.com/ from a guy working tech support at a hosting company, basically backing up what John said.

And so what if MS is patching up Windows Server 2003. If someone is running a server they should know to close all the unnecessary ports anyway. That should NOT be expected of end user's. They should be able to plug the thing in and get to work. Not be a microsoft certified developer or system admin just to check their ****ing email.

GraphicsGuy: Sweet! Did you get the dual? I'm probably going to get the 12" powerbook so I take it to work and use it there so I don't have to put up with the crap compaq machine that I have there.

And so what if MS is patching up Windows Server 2003

Because far too many people that are running the Server OS's are just as stupid as most home users. Microsoft is finally realizing this. I work in this field, so I see it every day. We have a lot of clients where their "IT" person is just a girl who gets her own desk that took a networking class at a local community college. These people are what make us the most money, because they screw something up in DNS or Active Directory. There are people that should not be in charge of computer networks. Last week at our city hospital, their network went down. We initially assumed it was a virus, beings that the Blaster and SoBig were the main nasty's that week, but it turned out that their IT people had screwed up the routing on a main switch. And these are supposed to be network administrators, these are people with Bachelor's degrees and certifications coming out the wazoo. Microsoft has realized that there are people like this that run computer networks, and hence, the locking-down of the server OS.

Look at the automotive industry for example. Look at the first 20 years of automobiles. The internal combustion engine ran at something like 30% of it's theoretical 75% efficiency rate for the first 40 years of it's life. I think the automobile and the computer are the two most important things to ever pass across the earth. Things of this magnitude take a long time to get right, and may never be as complete as we need them to be. Look at how your car runs now...after over 100 years we still can't make a car that will last 100,000 miles without anything going wrong with it...we still cannot achieve gas mileage of better than 40 MPG (or whatever the new cars run, I don't know, I have a V8, I only get 18).

Now I'm not trying to apologize for Microsoft, but they are being blatantly attacked here, and I'm trying to say that it's going to take time to get it even mostly right. I'm not saying it's OK that they cost companies all that money because of security breaches, but that **** would not happen if there weren't people out there trying to exploit those vunerabilites. Blame the criminal, not the lockmaker. If somebody wants to get in your house, they'll kick in the door, or come in a window. No matter what, your're not going to keep 100% of the riff-raff out 100% of the time. I could repeat myself 1000 times and many people won't get it, and I don't expect everybody to, but again, blame the person trying to break in, not the carpenter who built the house.

Whoa, there, fellas! - I'm doing okay, but I'm not Richie Rich!! - I ordered the G5 1.8 with 1GB RAM...

Considering the leap I'm taking (from using my Beige G3 300 with 192 RAM) I'll be equally as happy as if I got the Dual 2 GB. - plus, I just sprung for the Canon 10D camera, too.

The dual 2's aren't supposed to ship until end of September, and there's no way in hell I've got that kind of patience, dudes.

That'll be sweet. Tell us all about it when you get it.

I'm getting pretty close to talking my boss into a 12" powerbook I think. Can't wait!

Hey chris - now's the best time - or pretty soon - the dual G4's are going down in price everyday - look at MacConnection, etc. for good deals - and, if possible, get them in a bidding war vs. each other. They are so competitive they'll do almost anything to get your business. ;)
