the greatest 3d program is maya (shrek, final fantasy,matrix...), softimage is almost as god as maya .... 3d max is not a profesional program in my opinion (i am using 3d max) , lightwave is something betwin XSI(softimage) and 3dmax

It is a package "I" can afford... so I say it's the best for me. Maya is just WAY to expensive, as is Lightwave. Regular people can't go out and purchase those titles. I bought Bryce way back when, and it is easy to learn.... but I have a friend that has 3D Max and I like it a whole lot better than Bryce. On it being a proffesional package.... I know pros that use it daily.... granted they aren't building "Shrek" but they are doing 3D modeling on a proffesional level. |

Lightwave is half the price of max yet is still used proffesionally in film studios. the max renderer is poor with no support for radiosity and needs dozens of plug-ins before it can attempt anything such as hair or cloth. |

In response to Fig's question: It must be a pretty good package...ever seen "Driven"? Much of the work in that movie was done using 3DSM, which is what prompted me to get it. |

In "The One" they used poser and lightwave for the previs stuff. On Dual 867mhz G4s of course...

I'm familar with what Max can do actually, just wondering on what the opposing argument might be And LightWave's renderer is awesome, tho Max's has gotten much better in the last revision or two. LightWave is used in a lot of commercial and film work tho, Supernova, the Autotrader spots, and most of the Dodge spots with digital cars come to mind... Chris |

3d studio max and Maya are lovely programs, though they cost an arms worth :P. (oh instead of a rule, why not just something like a sticky for all new users to read? that'd be easier IMO) |
