Eh, no, I was along the lines of Asus/Gigabyte, Micron, etc, heh. Unless that's "bargain bin" *shrug*. If it is, everything is.

My point is, if you buy from a place like Dell or alienware, the prices are going to be much closer to the Macs prices, than if you buy the parts from 10 different companies and assemble it yourself. It's also cheaper to buy materials and build your own house, but it's not practical for a lot of people, so you pay a little more to have it done right by a professional builder. Same with computers. I could build a PC if I wanted to, but I never have. I'd rather pay a few hundred more and just get it from one place, and customize it by choosing a different option in a drop down menu, rather than ordering different parts, checking for compatibility, putting it all together, etc. I like using computers, not building them. Just like I like driving cars, not tinkering with it in my garage every weekend. If you like to save a few bucks and know where every part in your computer came from, and how every detail works, and spend the time to put it all together and get it all working, then the PC is perfect for you. But if you just want to go somewhere and buy something, bring it home, plug it in, and use it, then the Mac is a good option.

Derek, so do you go to the corner store and pay *$2.00/gallon for gas, or go down the road and pay $1.50? I mean, they both fuel your car and get you to the same place. ;) * all prices are hypothetical and not current with Tennessee and Alabama gas prices. Pleae consult your manual when buying gas in either of these states. Building a PC is almost flawless nowadays, I mean, even mattboy could do it. Unless you just can't push a card in or turn a screwdriver. I built my current PC with no knowledge (other than reading a little on what's compatible) on how to do it. It's been running more than 2 years. Are these top of the line systems wanted (PC/Mac/whatever)? Yes. Are they practical? No, not for the average to above average user. Are they needed? If you possibly edit lots of video, yes, other than that, no. That's all I'm getting at. I'm not downing Macs (or anything else), I'm thinking reasonably. Anyway, it's way past my bed time. 5 am comes quick when it's 11:30 pm, lol. I'll be back....sometime. |

That's why I showed you the prices of the cheaper Macs, so you don't think they are all $3000. $950 for a 1ghz tower is pretty darn reasonable. I wouldn't build my own PC. Like I said, I could, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't buy the cheapest parts I can find on Pricewatch either. I'd get something decent that will last a little longer and be less likely to cause problems. I also normally wait 2-3 years and just buy a new computer, rather than upgrading every little thing every few months. I also buy the fastest computer I can when I get a new one, rather than always having a "so so" machine. And I buy gas at the first gas station I see after I realize I need gas. I couldn't even tell you how much I paid per gallon when I filled up this morning. I'd rather pay a few cents extra than drive all over the damn city looking for the cheapest gas price. |

It's ALL about the OS, he says again, with not a hint of irony or sarcasm.

But you're confusing cheap prices with cheap parts. Cheap price and part is Betty Lou's Motherboard for $100, as opposed to an Asus' motherboard for $100, which is not a cheap "part", don't confuse the two. My PC has all name-brand stuff. But I saw no reason to go to [enter computer company] to get it for a few hundred dollars more, when I can get the same thing, minus [assuming] lousy tech support. I'll save the $$ and be my own tech support, and since the parts were cheap enough they can easily be replaced (yet I've had to do that, other than upgrading....not upgrading new parts, upgrading "swap-overs" from when I built this one and added parts from my old PC). Price is just one thing. I know I've been focusing on that, but that's the tip of the iceberg. But as I said some posts back in the thread, what an old debate. It never goes anywhere. ;) I'm really attempting sleep this time...man I'm gonna regret climbing that 40 foot ladder tommorow morning. :o I wont get into the OS debate either, I saw that. ;) |

I'm gone for a month or two movin' to Tennessee, and MBB shows up!!!! Man! That made my day--an old friend returned. :D Who started this thread anyways? In this discussion, as with any other, people will gravitate toward the familiar in most cases. Those who don't, will often follow trends or listen to propaganda. That's why this country spends billions on marketing and sales. Either platform is faster than snot. Why, then, do all the top design firms use Macs? Because they're better for graphics design? In my opinion, no--they use them because they're familiar with them. I believe over half of Adobe's sales are now PC based. Do I dislike OSX because it's not as good as WindowsXP? No, I like windows because I'm familiar with it. I've installed every Windows OS since 3.1. I've built half a dozen PC's. What happens when my new G5 goes south (the G4's in the graphics lab @ school had probs all the time)... I don't know what to do. I guess I pay someone to fix it--NOT! I'd almost think someone started this thread to try and push Dek's button.... |
