Don't tell Mattboy, but I went the the Apple store to 'test-drive' a G5.

I dunno about this whole Mac G5 thingy... Yeah, it's sexy--but hey... I don't even pay for real sex, why would I pay all the extra money for a 'sexy' puter?

I could do a LOT with that much money buildin' an AMD 64-bit machine...

What did you THINK this thread was about?

So what exactly is your question? If you don't appreciate OSX and all its niceties, then build an AMD machine. That's about all there is to it.

I just configured an Alienware system with the AMD as closely as I could to the Dual G5, and it came out to $3250. Which of course doesn't include OSX or any of the iApps, etc. I'm sure you could build an AMD machine for cheaper than that, but that's about the closest you will get to comparing a Windows machine to the dual G5, and it's actually more expensive.

Then I tried a Dual Xeon 3.06ghz from Dell matched as close as I could, and it came out to $3700. So... I'm not seeing the expense that you are. The Dell had a Quadro 64mb video card though. I don't know how much more that is than the ATI 9600.

Anyway, then you also have the eMacs, which are super cheap, and of course the Powerbooks which are speedy and the best laptops out there.

Dual A64 motherboard - $430
2Ghz AMD64 CPU x 2 - $800
1GB PC3200 RAM - $230
Radeon 9800 Pro - $380
WindowsXP PRO - $140
Case for all that stuff - $80
Cooling (everything) - less than $100
Total - $2160

Dual 2Ghz G5, w/ crappier video card, and less RAM - $3000

As far as all applications go, the left over money will cover that... and more. Also, the AMD system above, will beat ANY G5, guaranteed.
Hmm.....

Plus you didn't include a soundcard (might be integrated on mobo, but not with optical audio in/out), hard drive, ethernet card (might be integrated, but probably not 10/100/1000), modem, probably no bluetooth, no optical drives, (the G5 includes a DVD burner of course), no firewire 800, no PCI-X slots, etc., etc.

And like utopian said, it's all about the OS anyway. If OSX ran on intel processors and still had the same amount of reliability, integration, stability, and compatibility, I'd be happy to build my own machine after scavenging for parts all over the country. But it doesn't. So you buy what it does work on, which is an amazingly fast, beautiful system made specifically to run OSX on it.

Compatability eh? So you can take a camera and have it never work through USB? So you can take an extrenal drive and have it never work? So you can only have about 50% of all games out? I mean sure, it's improving with Word and IE for OSX... but still, why not just use Windows?

Stability eh? Every single, Mac I've ever used crashed. The eMacs with OS8 at school, it feels like sodomy when using them. My friend's Mac at home (the one with like a half-sphere and a silver thing with the LCD on it) with OSX, we never did finish our video editing, since NOTHING worked and addition of something new (hardware and software) made it crash. My history teacher's powerbook (older kind), nothing that came from a PC worked. Nothing. There are oodles of other bad mac experienced that I've had, I just can't remember them all detailed enough to post about.

If you only buy a Mac for it's looks, then sure, waste your money. have your polished smooth aluminum and pretty buttons.

As far as all that extra hardware for the AMD system goes:
audio, ethernet, firewire, modem - integrated
200MB 8MB cache - $180
DVD/CD/CDRW player (not burner) - $70
if DVD burner - $200
bluetooth - who needs it? Wireless mice and keyboards SUCK.
And I've never heard of a PCI-X slot.
