lol. Well I don't actually edit them in Notepad. Although anyone that could, would be DAMN GOOD in my eyes, lol. Non-text files can sometimes contain interesting little tidbits of text/info within them.

Digital camera image?

You can probably get the software packaged with the camera and save the files from that software as a usable format. Maybe just call the folks and have them do it and email that to ya again.

I have run into that bad jpeg marker several times in the past... and going back to the camera software has about a 95% success rate.

(in the past I've even instructed people to set thier monitor to as large a resolution as they can... and screen cap that image. then send me the screen cap. ..

hey all,
this sounds like an optimization thing. I've seen it before, but can't remember the fix... Platform issue? Or, maybe have the client re-optimize as a NON-progressive JPG? I've heard nothing but bad things about progressive jpgs.

That photoshop 3.0 thing - it comes from the check box in your PS preferences called "MAXIMIZE BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY" uncheck that junk. It adds a ton of crap to your image source just in case whoever opens your file has Photoshop 3, or 4. Saves you file size, if nothing else.
