Ok, this is an odd one for me. I'm working on my church's web site, and I was sent a variety of pictures to put up. Some of them came to me saved as a jpg, but they had this really horrible bright, over-exposed look to them. (example: here). Now, I originally tried to open them in Photoshop, and got an error message: Could not open [file] because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is not found. She tried to re-send them, and I got the same results. This was a week ago. Today, I was going to scale one of them down, and without thinking, I automatically tried to open it in Photoshop, and this time was presented with the option of converting the picture to the working profile, and when I chose that, the picture opened in PS like it was supposed to look. This happened with one other picture when I originally got them, but at the time, it was the only one that did it. Why this one decided to ask to be converted this time, I don't know. But the first time i tried, I got that invalid marker type error. So when that one worked, I tried the other 2. Well, they won't do it, I get that invalid error. They were all saved the same, so why some will and some won't ask to be converted is beyond me. But I really need to get these other 2 converted, so does any one have any ideas? And can you tell me why that 1 picture decided to ask to be converted this time, and not the first time. I've tried converting from a jpg to a jpg (just resaving it in my image viewer), which I'm then able to open them in PS, but no matter what profile I choose, it stays looking the same. |

So you can get them to open up and look correct in PS, but when you save it and open it in another viewer it still looks ****ty? Heres my suggestion- Once you have it in PS, and it looks the way its suppose to, select the whold image and copy and paste it into a new file. Then save it as a .jpg....what are you using them for anyway? Personally I would save it as a .tif. So theres my advice, hope it helped. |

No, I can't get them to open in Photoshop, due to that invalid JPEG marker error, mentioned above. I can only view them in my image viewer, and they look crappy (in that example link above). A couple of them asked to be converted when I tried to open them in PS, and they converted and looked fine. One didn't do it before, but did ask to be converted the 2nd time I tried to open it. Originally neither would open, due to that marker error, but for some odd reason, I was presented with the convert option after multiple attempts. I have 2 remaining. They're for a website. |

Odds are they were scanned and saved in a different program from Photoshop, especially if the JPEG was optimized when saved. Photoshop can sometimes not decode them properly and you get idiosyncratic errors like that. Have you tried opening them in any other image programs? I suggest you try them in a freeware image viewer, Irfanview pops to mind (http://www.irfanview.com/). If they open in that and the colors aren't all screwy like in your example, then just resave them in a lossless format (.tif) and then open them in Photoshop and go from there. |

I use VuePrint Pro as an image viewer, and that's the only thing I can view them in (that I have anyway). They look screwy like that. I tried converting them to tif through VuePrint, and still the same results. The thing that strikes me odd, is that they were all saved the same, and from the same program (whatever the person uses), and some Photoshop converted some on opening and some it didn't. I took one of the last 2, and resaved it as a tif through VuePrint, and opened it in Photoshop. After about 30 minutes playing with just about every tool that PS has, I finally got it fairly decent. Scaled down to the 200 x 141 size it needs to be, it "works", so I think I'm just going to replace the last one with another picture. It was really supposed to be these particular 4, because they're the 4 that they use on the church newsletter, but I'm tired of trying to get the pictures in the right format, and trying to convert them myself. |

Can you upload one of the pics you can't open so we can see first hand what the deal is. The one you linked to in your first post I was able to open...

Yeah, that one above I had just re-saved through VuePrint as a jpg, so I could at least try and get it open in PS, which worked. Here it is, exactly how I recieved it, and it won't open for me in PS. Hmm...actually it won't even show when you try to link to it, just a broken image. http://www.christumcmobile.com/temp/family1.zip |

Won't even open up in image view so the file is more than likely corrupt. I'd really dig in to see what they are doing. Something has to be wrong...

Well if it was corrupt, wouldn't you not be able to view it period? I can still view it in Vueprint, Photoshop just won't open it. Although (opening the file in Notepad) it appears to be a Photoshop file. So, that's really got me puzzled. |
