The4man, I've never used the Amaya browser/editor. When I make my HTML or I should say XHTML I do it by hand with maybe some initial help by Dreamweaver. For all those interested in learning more about standards, I've found this site helpful: http://www.webstandards.org/ |

Yes, thank you deker. If the numbers are off by 1%, they are still off by a large amount. But feel free to design for 1 browser and only one. That way, you can cater to other "free-thinkers" just like yourself. You shouldn't be so defensive. It's their numbers I am criticizing, not yours. Unless you are them. and just because you pointed it out: quoted from the upsdell site "The best stats for a site are the stats gathered for that particular site: and even these are skewed by caching and faulty browser-detection. Bottom line: use statistics with extreme caution" |

Axiom what you say makes sense to a point, but I never told anyone to design for one browser. Let me ask you this... when you make a site, do you make your site compatible for hand-held Internet devices? How about for the visually impaired that use Internet devices made specifically for the blind? How about for the 12 million users that view in 640x480? Or the 48 million that are viewing without Javascript? Or the 15 million that only have 256 colors on their monitor? Keeping *all* those folks in mind? No? Then you yourself are burning a given *percentage* of visitors. Let's face it, it's damn hard, if not impossible to make a site that works well for everybody. So what does that leave you with? Most likely, percentages. Designing for the majority. Every designer has to decide what they are comfortable with when it comes to compatibility and *who* they are going to burn. If nothing else, designers should check their designs in a variety of browsers to see how their designs stack up. And they should be aware of the general demographics of Internet users. Yes, statstics are easily skewed but you have start *somewhere* in your research and get a general idea of what's going on otherwise you are just guessing and speculating - not good. Then if designers decide to screw Opera or Netscape or Mozilla or 640x480 users, at least they are making a better informed decision. |
