As I said at the end of my article. This is the first time I have ever tried writing anything of this sort. If you read ALA alot, you will know the direction I am trying to go. It seems like I have a personal grudge against grunge because I didnt get the article exactly tuned the way I wish I could have. It takes time to develop good writing skills, just like it takes time to develop your own style of design. I am not attempting to attack someone personally because of their choice of layout or artwork. More criticizing the deeper meaning. "Why do you have to learn this type of thing before you are even familiar with the tools at hand?" As for grunge, I don't hate it. It's like flash to me. Pretty too look at some of the time, boring the rest. When I first saw a site like that, or a peice of artwork in that style, I was in awe. Now I just shrug it off as another rendition of something that has been over done. I don't think trends exist everywhere. On the internet, they are almost impossible to avoid. But in the real world, there will always be someone who goes beyond the norm and strives to be ahead of the pack. I explained my point to several people before doing this, and they seemed to see where I was going. But that was in aim and irc and there, I have real time input on what my comments are. When I wrote this article, I was bored and wanted to get a nice discussion going on the forum. After reading my post a couple days later, I realized I didn't focus enough on the originality point. This is something that will come with time. I left it up because it seemed to be inspiring people to talk about something other than this cool flash site or look at this neat-o grunge site etc. I singled grunge out mainly because it has been what has dominated this forum for the past couple weeks. |

Just so you know I wasn't slamming you.....just grasping what i got from it. You went off topic, while sticking to the topic, but not portraying the exact topic....damn...I dont think that made sense. It did in my head.

I know you weren't. And yes, I know I strayed off topic a couple of times. Bias is present in any form of media. Just as this was my opinion, it will have some of my personal bias in it. Sure, I could write an article based soley on fact and it would be 100% correct. You couldn't argue with it, but who would want to have a discussion about that? |

I think a lot of people choose for "grunge" because they think it's easy and you don't have to make it look pretty... But that's absolutely wrong. btw, i don't think you can compare grunge to gothic. Gothic I believe is black clothing, tattoos, drinking blood ;), collars with spikes, and grunge.. well Nirvana style I guess, sort of a messed up, i don't care style. |

i'm gonna post my thoughts, whether anyone wants to hear them or not... my general opinion is this: a good designer is a good designer. people who don't have any design skills often see grunge as "easy" and just knock stuff out with lots of brushes and bits of text and go "look, i'm a designer!" No you're not, you're a person who put together an image with brushes and bits of text. Good grunge is just like any other kind of design, a. it's hard and b. it's only appropriate in certain situations. There are some designers and firms out there that do killer work in that style, but i'll guarantee you those firms can also do awesome work for any other kind of client that walks thru their door. design principles apply to any style, and if you don't know them you don't know them. and if you're good then you're good. don't learn how to design a site like juxt or 2advanced or praystation, or anyone for that matter. learn how to design. chris |
