If you want, I'll scan the ad I saw in Communication Arts mag for "grunge" looking fonts*. like anything, I think some of this particular style of design is really nice stuff. Others, well, you know, not so nice. - BUT - I will say this: "trendy" design isn't going anywhere unless one thing happens. That thing is: every designer in the universe goes blind. The term is appropriation, I believe. Borrowing, allowing influence, ripping-off, call it what you want. I battled with traditional printmakers about it for 5 years in college. Because I wanted to incorporate Photoshop and scanning into traditional Lithography and woodcut printmaking and the traditonalists cried foul. "That's stealing someone's creation." I think it's more like a remix. Great thread, everyone. Finally, some brain food. I'm into this one. *note: it's from Fall 1994. |

I was just reading the Joshua Davis interview at surfstation, and he said that he doesn't surf the internet. Don't know if he was kidding or what, but that's kind of cool, no matter which way you slice it. And Axiom, great "article." If you wrote some more, and there would be a great disscussions in here! |

I thought Josh's whole interview was kind of a smart ass conversation. He gave one word answers on a lot of stuff and it wasn't really interesting at all. I guess he was pressed for time or something. He may not browse the internet very much... but he obviously does some, since he posts stuff on all those news sites all the time about 'look at this cool site'.

Hooray! Hooray for Axiom! But guess what? You can hold shift while using the Polygonal Lasso Tool and get 45 degree angles! Oh sweet! I'm a designer!

Also, Deker, you are right. After reading my article again, it does seem a bit insulting towards it's target. Like I said, I am working on my writing skills. So give me some time, critique my work and help me learn. |

'trends' only seem to come up if you run in certain circles. i can't name more than two (and i only heard about them on this site). i think these trendy styles and discussions about them have no effect on the professional world. |

As I've read everyone's comments about the grunge style being trendy I thought I'd put my thought on the matter. If you think about it............... alot of people who are into web designing, drawing, painting, writting poetry, and stuff like that live and dress by "Gothic" or "grunge". Wouldn't you think then that the grunge style that keeps popping up everywhere is a result of artists being similar in their tastes and life style rather than trying to simply copy eachother? When I think of trendy I think of people wearing Old Navy trying to fit in with all the "normal people". The majority of artists don't fit in with the norm!!! So I don't know.... in my opinion seeing all this grunge just shows that people like us are just similar in the way that Old Navy wearing trendy high school kids are to the publics idea of normal. Just my own opinion. |
