You probably wouldn't gain much fame then, U23, 'cause that would keep you out of a lot of big venues...
Sorry, Dek...but I've worked hard—for 30-some years—to hone my skills, and I'm proud of them. There's NO WAY I'd accept any appearance that required a mimed performanc...my sense of integrity wouldn't allow it. Besides, what I do requires a certain amount of freedom to improvise, particularly with regards to the number of measures and tempo-changes as the up-to-the-second mood dictates. Programmed tracks can't conform to that.

I'm not saying you should lip-sync, I'm just saying a lot of large venues and things require it, which would prohibit you from playing.

That would be OK by me. I'd just tell them they could take their offer and stuff it up their dark hole.

Imagine asking a band like Phish or the Dead, or any jazz band worth their stuff to mime a performance, anywhere. You'd get laughed out of the building. Their whole paradigm is built on the freedom to improvise.

Phish and the Grateful Dead have both played SNL.

There are quite a few other artists on the list who can certainly deliver the goods live as well. And there are some, like Sun Ra, who wouldn't be caught dead miming a performance.

SNL List of Hosts and musical guests. This is fun to look through.

EDIT: Crap! The long link gets truncated when using standard HTML!! Bad forum script. BAD!

Trying to pass lip-syncing off as a live performance is a joke. It’s like watching MTV really loud. Most people end up watching the concert by looking at the screen at the concert anyways. It’s ridiculous that what your hearing isn’t even live. $75 to see Madonna? That’s horrible. :(

Funny...and I had forgotten I read this last week in our local newspaper:

A local high school girl entered and won a Clear Channel-sponsored radio contest, and Ashlee Simpson is supposed to "perform" there this coming Thursday night. I can just imagine the "outsider" kids who already hate her brand of popfluff, making plans to sabotage or otherwise disrupt the concert with loud and sour derision, fueled even more vigorously by the SNL gaffe.

Pop stars to perform at Donegal High School.
