i don't spend a ton of time on here but i do spend more here than any other graphic/web related forum i go to. i don't give "dood you rock" critiques to work either as a lot of you would know, if i'm going to crit something i'm going to do it in detail and be blunt, i am a "pro" (for whatever that's worth) and have the work experience to be able to let some of you know what the real world of design is looking for. http://www.teamphotoshop.com/forum/vbforum/showthread.php?t=21610&page=2 http://www.teamphotoshop.com/forum/vbforum/showthread.php?t=21356 it's really not worth my time to sit and look at a piece, give a detailed critique, then not even get so much as a "thanks" or some sort of discussion in return. i've found the same thing is true in the photoshop help forum, i've actually created an uploaded a psd on a few occasions to show how an effect was done and the initial poster never posts in the topic again. this isn't meant to bash people or the board and i don't mean to single anyone out, but if folks around here want to get professional, relevant comments on their work they need to act like it. chris |

I hear what you're saying, I think if you take the time and really write out a detailed critique people should be a little more receptive to what you have to say. With that said you have to also look at the different ages on this forum and level of experience too. Some people don’t know how to take criticism, others are looking for some quick feedback, some people just don’t visit the forum that much. I wouldn’t take it personally. I think you should post with the intention of helping people out and not so much to gain respect and be appreciated. Well that’s the feeling I kind of got when I read your post. |

I agree. It's hard to regulate how people are going to critique, mostly due to age and experience differences. I've been designing for 15 years. Hell, there are people in this forum who weren't born yet when I was slamming out tri-fold brochures on Aldus Pagemaker 2.0 ! I try to get involved as much as I can on this forum, but I don't do the critiques much... same reasons. If someone wants my opinion on a piece, email me. Otherwise, knock yourself out posting "dood you rock" replies. I don't care. |

The thing is alot of work here has turned more into digital art rather then design. Art is a personal thing and can really hurt someone if given a design critique, so I have a feeling people would rather give a "cool" or "I dont like it." Thats how art is. No one can tell someone that they should change something just because they dont like it. Design on the other had isnt as dominant on this forum, because there are a lot of people who aren't "pro" The web showcase is more design, and I do see a lot of people giving good advice there. Then move over to the art showcase section and you will see a lot of "I like it" which is the one phrase you never really want to say when dealing with design. Give the reason why you like it, what makes it what it is? On the other hand art that is done digitally (on photoshop) is art. Its a hit or miss. Every designer should have an artistic background and if I did goto art instead of graphic design I wouldnt want people saying what I need to do to make it to their liking. Its my personal art work and it shows my feelings, no one can change that. People who do post in the way you say they do (and yes I know exactly what you mean) may not have the design background as your's, mine or the other guy's so they can really one give their oppinions on how it looks, they may not see what the problem is with the work. Not to offend anyone here, but this forum is more towards the fun part of photoshop/art/design rather than the professional aspect, and a lot of people are just trying to know photoshop and other programs just a bit better. There are other great forums out there that are filled with professional/college students that know what is needed to be a good designer. Im not saying you are wrong here, im merely telling my side of how this forum works. |

redeye - yes - art is about like or don't like.... but what do you do when it's a bunch of lensflares and a couple of spheres covered in plastic wrap? Is that a personal feeling? Even if they put a little poem on top of it... or write something like "autumn in my heart" ... heck I think I like that more than the bling bling stuff which for some reason seems the most downloaded action/tut here. I mean it was nice when it came out.... about 300 years ago. on the other hand I think teamps is easier to belong to than many other forums. Even if they start with crappy lensflares - they start at least. If they go over to one of those "pro only," apartheid, forums they'll be trampled to death in "boo"s and "shoo" and never get to learn anything. So the thing is.... the way I see it, a forum is like a bar ....the kind of music the owners play attracts a certain kind of people....you'll not see rock fans in a place that plays cafeconcert music nor will you see jazz listeners in a rock cafe. Teamps has a little of all kinds. We get some heavy players and some groupies and a few lone wolfs and the occasional Bethoven-type composer ....and the general public who comes to listen to the pretty music, take in the atmosphere and gawk at the high and mighty. We also have people who just come in for a few minutes to have a coffee on the way to his or her "pro" club. Is that a bad thing? Is it good? It's a bar... you drink your beer, listen, look around and if you don't like it... you go someplace else. I think this is good. I saw someone mention a while ago that ratings and postcounts is a bad thing. I don't think so.... I think it's a measure of hum much some of the members like it here....and besides - if you come to the same bar every day and they haven't kicked you out yet well - you should get some sort of prefferential treatment if only for the time invested. Even if it's a waitress girl whispering to a newcomer "leave him alone, he's a regular...he sleeps here sometimes." You also get to act a little grumpy and moan about all these young pups that disturb your beer pondering and remember out loud the good old days when the bar only catered to the needs of a select few..out of which only a few are still alive...or still coming around. It's life. It's a community. It's more than just Photoshop. Sure - that's what the title says... but if you go to a bar called "The king's men" do you expect to see guys in armors? - Nope It's the same old drunks hanging around all day long because they have no life of their own, or the wife gives them hell at home....and if you go around there's bound to be some looks thrown your way with a muttering or two... long rant - I know...and on a friday night lol - I must be one of the sleepover regulars....but I like it Charm - still have the little hearts? Eehhh..the good old days :D |
