Well I always give all new songs a chance, even if it is pop. Hell, I hate to admit it, but I liked that N'Sync song "Bye Bye Bye" for about the first 10 times I heard it, but those 10 times were within the span of 1 day. Pop songs tend to be SEVERELY overplayed, by both radio and television, and it drives me nuts. But it seems to me that 90% of the songs that get overplayed are pop. And I was thinking about it yesterday, and pop to me I guess isn't necessarily a genre, like you said. It is basically anything that is played 10,000 times per day. Whether it be a "pop" song, or an R&B song. But I will stand by my statement that "pop" music, I.E. Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, LFO, (just made a realization, I shouldn't have said "pop". I guess what I'm talking about is the "Boy-Bands". I know Jennifer Lopez will be around for a while, and I know Britney Spears will be too (but just because she is hot). I spoke too soon about the whole "pop" genre, because when I think of pop, I think of the boy-bands. But as I started saying, I will stand by my belief that the boy-bands are coming to an end soon. Their current fans are growing up, and will not be satisfied with the type of music they are feeding them. And unless those boy-bands are willing change with their fans, they are heading towards imminent doom. Popularization, or as you said better, commercialization, drives me nuts. Many bands that I used to have a strong love for, "sold-out" so to speak. I used to love listening to Limp Bizkit before they came to MTV. I remember back in the day when I first heard "Faith". Man, that was the coolest cover song I had ever heard, and I swore to God that I would never get sick of that song. But that time I also spoke too soon. MTV got ahold of them, and played the living s**t out of that song. I soon came to hate it. Same thing with Korn. I used to listen to my Korn tape over and over and over and over again. I used to listen to "Blind" for 3 hours at a time. Play, rewind. Play, rewind. Then they also hit MTV, and no longer appealed to me. Maybe I am selfish, maybe I only like to listen to the things that aren't MTV-ized is because I'm selfish and don't like to share "my" music. The only band/musician that MTV got ahold of that I didn't stop liking was Fatboy Slim. I'm been a devoted Fatboy Slim fan for nearly 4 years. And when I first saw Fatboy Slim on MTV, I was actually kind of happy because I knew that he deserved it. Fatboy Slim didn't force his way into the limelight. As a matter of fact, he kind of stays in the shadows. I mean, just watch his videos. He will never make more than just a cameo appearance in his own videos. When he got married to Zoe Ball, it wasn't a big publicity stunt. You didn't see him in every public place where there was media afterwards. I could name a million bands that I liked before they hit MTV, but I know that you get my point, so I won't. My best prediction so far would be Crazy Town. I ran into the CD at the local "On-Cue", and it had a really catchy cover. Christmas Eve of 1999. That day I knew that Crazy Town would make it to the big time by next spring. It took over a year after I predicted, but they still made it. I usually don't know that far ahead of time, it's usually just a few months or less. But if you really want to know my next picks for bands, email me, and I will email you the list. I don't want to publicy say it here, because I don't want to put their names out there. Sure, I'd like to see these bands make the money that they deserve, but I don't want to help them out, because then I would be helping to make them popular, instead of actually making predictions on the next bands, I would be promoting them, and my predictions would be fixed. And that wouldn't say much for my ability to pick them out. But I think there is a button on the top of this thread for me email, so just email me and I will send them to you. Edit: Geez, I was going to make that a short post about emailing you the next 20 bands. Turned out to be mighty long. |

Ever since I went to do grunge, I've listen to less Hiphop music and more to Hard Rock. Currently in my everyday listening list is : Linkin Park/Hybrid Theory Soundtrack of Queen Of the Damned Pap Roach The Source 1999 Nelly/STL Ja Rule and Not forgetting Tupac/Makeveli I always listen to Linkin Park and Papa Roach when doing my grunge pieces, cause the lyrics have stories in them and I relate those stories in my grunge. As for the POP genre, err.. Too much radio/tv play, which makes it really sick to listen or watch. Oh... There's a scratch DJ track on Linkin Park's CD that I always listen to while sketching layouts, works best. |
