mattboy, I disagree with your statement about Pop music. I see what you mean to say, but I bet you would be surprised at how much music you listen to (and like) could be, and is generally classified as Pop. Music is music. If the lead singer wrote it, or the drummer, or even the producer, it's all music. Some are more talented than others, and some sound better than most, but it's all music. Is anyone here a musician? |

Ok, MUSIC is my life!!! I listen almost everything! And daman I like rap ALOT Also I like (obviously) LIL KIM SHE IS AWESOME! Ok just letting everyone know. Also I love Techno and dance music. And I have to disagree Mattboy... Pop is music face it, maybe you dont like it that much, but eventually you will have to admit that pop is music and its here to stay! (at least i think :p) I like: LIL KIM , 311, Linkin Park, Blu Cantrell, Babyface, Alien Ant Farm, Sum 41, Blink 182, Gorillaz, Missy Elliot, Trina, Foxy Brown, Ray J, Brandy, Sunshine Anderson, Alicia Keys, Trick Daddy, Jimmy Eat World , No Doubt, Jay-Z, DMX, Jermaine Dupri, Janet Jackson So as you see I like a VERY wide variety of music.... The only type I really don't like is Country. Oh... and did i mention that I liked Lil Kim? Ok I completely agree! |

Pop is not music. Pop is not music. Pop is not music. I'll say it over and over and over. And!, what I listen to is not pop. Pop is not what I listen to. I could write my thesis on why pop sucks and the 1000 reasons I don't listen to it. And if any of you kids had a good feel of the music scene today, you would know that pop is heading for a huge drop within the next year or two. Rock is the new face of music. 2 years ago, watching MTV, rock was basically non-existent. I hate to admit that MTV basically decides what is popular music, but it is hard to disprove. There are more popular rock songs right now than there have been since the mid-80's. There just isn't room for 2 genres of music to be at the top. And N'Sync's recent song about "Pop being here to stay", was just a bad thing to say. We all know that when you get too ****y, things go wrong. In this case, it is the right thing. Music goes through phases, 30 years ago it was soft rock, 25 years ago it was disco. 20 years ago it was that early-80's European electric pop (or whatever you want to call it). 15 years ago it was butt-rock or big-hair rock (again, whatever you want to call it), 10 years ago it was pop, 7-8 years ago it was grunge. 5 years ago until today, it's been pop. There will always be downturns and upturns on what music will be popular. But pop will not be on top for much longer. It WILL always be here, don't get me wrong, but it will no longer be "cool". I'm going to stop right here, since I have things to do and food to eat. But read this over, and think about what I said. Music is my life. I listen to music over 80% of the time I am awake. Since I was 5 years old, music is about the only thing I ever really cared about. I'm been watching the music industry very closely since then. I spend upwards of 15 hours per week searching out for the next big band. I could tell you the next 20 bands that will be big by December. (sometimes I'm a little off). But in conclusion, I feel strongly about what I am saying here. It is very difficult to get me to change my beliefs on anything music. The only thing I've changed in my life musically in the past 6 years is that I started listening to county. And I don't regret it. P.S., my girlfriend disagreed about my saying that "pop doesn't have good lyrics" too. But give a listen to anything by LFO or the Backstreet Boys. If you want, I will quote song lyrics, but as I said before, I don't have time right now. P.S.S., Scrypter, I am a musician. I write and arrange a lot of music. I don't consider myself great, because if I was, I'd have a record deal. |

I understand what u are saying mattboy_slim. I feel the same way to. But Pop is still music. I don't consider myself great, because if I was, I'd have a record deal. U don't have to be great... u just have to write Pop music :p . |

I listen to alot of everything nowadays. When I was really young, my brother started me on stuff like: Will always be my favorite, but I also expanded my horizons as I grew up, and became interested in other forms of music. Some of my 'latest' favs would be: (I'd pay big money to see either of those concerts :D) Since a recent trip to Disney World in November 2000, I got into trance. If anyone frequents WDW (or at least goes once in a while), and you haven't been to Mannequins Dance Palace, GO!. That place is so bad ass. Rotating dance floor and all. :D Anyway, um yeah....That's mostly what I listen to. I love music, but not some stuff. |

Ok, Matt, I see your point. I also see that you are in denial, but that's ok, I can live with that. You hate Pop. Fine. But I have to tell you that it has been a force for over 40 years now. Maybe not the Almighty Genre of Music, but it's been around and contrary to your last post, it isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Do you listen to REM? U2? How about The Beattles? Lot's of different artists have dipped into the Pop field. The thing of it is, all genres of music have gone through several stages of metamorphisis in their breef history of existance. The "rock" spawns (alternative, metal, soft, hard, etc.), the "pop" adaptions (bubblegum, disco, pop-rock, etc.), and even techno, and punk, and whatever. Labels aren't as defined as they used to be, and now one single song can encompass five different genres. It's a mess! But it's a good mess, because musicians are just adapting a freestyle mentality and it is resulting in some amazing music. I think I know what you are getting at. It isn't really the genre but the musicians that aren't really musicians (at least in your opinion), and they wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for MTV (which is probably true). You admit that it's "cool", but not cool to you, and that's fine. There are a number of musicians that I dislike and think that they are stealing the light from more reputible artists. Commercialization sucks. I don't think you should harbor such animosity towards an entire genre of music because of a few sour apples. Don't be closed minded! I would like to know who is on your list of 20 up-and-comers. I'm curious to see who you pick! I know a lot of great musicians who don't have record deals. Anyway, it isn't about greatness, it's about making great music, regardless of style. |
