imo the performance issue is overhyped. i get something done before someone else because of my design and software skills, not because my machine is faster once you're over a ghz or so chances are you're not using all the cpu power anyway.

as far as your choice, i'd say if you've already got a pc getting a mac laptop would be a good choice, among the other things mentioned it also makes you more marketable (knowing both platforms has helped me out many times, a lot of designers only know macs). only drawback is that you'll need to buy some mac versions of your software.

chris (who wants a mac)

I didn't say they were completely invulnerable to viruses, but I did say there aren't any right now, and there damn sure aren't as many as windows, and you don't hear about how the world has lost literally billions of dollars trying to get their Windows machines to work.

Flexibility? I really have no idea what you are talking about here. When was the last time you replaced the motherboard on a PC laptop? He's looking at laptops here, guys, not desktops. And the G5 is just as upgradeable as any PC desktop out there.

Low software compability has already been discussed, and is a myth spread by people that have most likely never even used a Mac.

I don't see how file storage can be unorganized. When you install a mac application, you just drop it into your aplpications folder. You're done. No install programs, no DLLs, no registry, nothing. It's all self-contained. When you want to erase a program, drag it to the trash, you're done. No uninstall programs to mess up and leave a ton of DLLs all over your system, no registry keys left behind... When you want to save something, just put it in your home directory. You're done. You can access the home directory from everywhere with one click. How is that unorganized?

Overpriced? Macs, especially laptops, are extremely competitively priced. Yes, you can get a piece of **** PC from eMachines or something for less money, but you really can't compare that to a Mac. I've compared the powerbooks to the Dell laptops, and feature to feature, they are very close, if not cheaper than the Dells. Plus they come with a lot more good software, not crap from some no-name company.

Plus, take my dad for example, he got some cheap PC built by some guy down the road. He saved a few hundred dollars up front. But now his hard drive just blew up, and he lost all of his files. He got hit with 3 different viruses on two computers, his machines were down for 2 weeks, and he's a full time web designer. That means absolutely no income for two weeks, just because his computer wouldn't work. Then he had to pay to have some computer techs come out and work on it for 8 hours. Then he had to buy expensive anti-virus and firewall software. He could have bought 3 macs with all the money he has lost in the past month alone, because he's using a Windows machine. yes, he could have patched them and avoided the viruses, but that would have been lost production time as well, trying to protect his computer from all of the viruses and security holes out there.

I know that no ones said this, but using a mac wont make you a better designer... I just have to say that because some people talk about it like it will. Thats all. Yah macs are cool. But if you spent as much on a pc laptop, you could have one just as sexy and sleek. But macs are cool, and I hear they don't crash. Whatever.
