You guys are confusing me. Photoshop has vector capabilities. With the pen tool. And vector masks. I know that it can't save vector graphics for web like Flash, but I can make this in PS: http://trhaynes.commscentral.net:8000/img/zebra1.gif and increase the size by 1200%, crop it, and get this (part of the eye): http://trhaynes.commscentral.net:8000/img/zebra2.gif No loss of quality. If I had rasterized it first, there would have been. But as it was, they are all shapes on vector masks, so it worked. At least I hope I'm understanding this correctly. tom |

You're right Tom, and I wanted to say something about using paths, because for the most part, they are vector. But I don't think there is anyways to keep them that way in a file. For example, I am pretty sure saving paths as an EPS in PS isn't the same as in Illustrator. The PS EPS can't be scaled up. I may be wrong on this one though. I think the end product either has to be flattened or at the very least merged with a transparency, and in that case, it would no longer be a "vector".

spectra: the reason why you do artwork at 300 dpi is so that ytou can do all the little nuances zoomed in at a nice comfortable big size and then downsize with no size loss and you can also always compress to get it down sizewise. but fyi i do all my webdesigns at 72 dpi. if that makes you happy, spectra. tom: to add on to what spectra said, i dont believe you can export Adobe Photoshop's vectors as a vector file that can be imported into other programs. For example i know for a fact (because i had this problem before lol) that with Swift3d you can't import photoshop's vectors, but you can import illustrator's. the way they work are vector, but photoshop is mainly a bitmap program. i dont believe it can actually export vector files. again i might be wrong so if someone could verify this and Tele: i'll copy and paste my explanation into your thread :D |

You're wasting time. Excessive file size wastes clients/bosses time. What you are doing is working with these high resolution images and making you're image well over 3 times the size it needs to be. It is always smart to make your image a bit larger then it needs to be so you are safe, and the final product will be cropped but do it at 72dpi. The zoom is a ridiculous argument. I work primarily with print work, so saving time on massive files is essential. I wouldn't design something at 1000dpi just so I could scales it down to 300dpi. That would be insane. If you are making something and really have no idea if you want it to be 1024 x 768 pixels or 50 x 100 pixels, well, then you have a whole different set of issues. |

Sure you can export for web in vector. Flash movies are vector. Are they not exported for web usage?

That whole thing, made in Photoshop, uses complete "Shape" layers with "vector mask". Does that mean it would work or not?

i just use pen tools to do what i think are vector images and i can upscale them and do what ever to them without them losing quality.... but.. is there a particular file you need to save as a vector?

IN PHOTOSHOP! Flash is of course fine with it. And Illustrator can make .eps files but I don't think they can be used on websites like Flash (like on threadless they use flash files so that users can zoom in on t-shirt designs). When you import .eps into Photoshop, it asks you how you want to import it. I think the options are "as pixels (bitmap", "as paths" or "as a shape layer". tom |
