K, I checked it out. Doesnt look much different. Just a bit darker. Do you think maybe they have their monitor settings different? Well might just be an aol issue =\

Yes. AOL does indeed recompress images and makes them look worse than they do elsewhere.

Plus, take into account that flat screens, especially LCDs or high quality CRTs, will bring out each and every single flaw in a graphic. All the details will be exposed however good or bad that may be. The monitors you usually look at websites on may not have that great a clarity. It just depends on the make and model of the monitor.

Well that sucks! lol......How do you circumvent that problem. Once again, AOL has bitten me on the @$s! I'll be in the client's office on Monday and I'll open a 'regular' browser, more than likely IE and see if that is it. If so, just one more reason for me to hate AOL! lol

If it is AOL, should I make an AOL compatible site with .ART graphics? I'm really taken by surprise with this and quite frankly, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be great.

As far as the model of the monitor goes, I'll find out on Monday and post in this thread or start a "part 2" thread concerning this. It's funny, just when I think I've covered all the bases for continuity of my websites over a multitude of mediums, something like this happens! I just wish I hadn't noticed it for the first time right in front of a client!!! ouch......I still have the job, in case you're wondering!

By the way, thanks to all of you for your help with this. I respect everyone's opinion, I've been a member of this group long enough to say that. Thank you all very much!

hehe.....is there any way to insert code into a web page to turn off the "compressed graphics" feature in AOL? I'm sure there isn't and I was just joking anyway, there must be a better solution (don't use AOL perhaps? lol). Found a great article of the subject, thanks to mrbogus for bringing it to my attention! Live and learn, this group and website makes that process easier though! Thanks Pank and everyone else.

Here's a link that goes into the problem at length for those who are interested.

I thought a lot of people used IE with an AOL connection?? There should be a way in AOL preferences but I am not sure. :D

This is what you need to do to fix the problem. I wonder if later versions of AOL have this feature turned off rather than on by default. I surely hope so.....hey AOL, thanks for the upset stomach and headache.....no really, thanks! lol

On AOL 4 and 5 go to 'MY AOL' on the toolbar and click on it.
Select 'Preferences' on the drop-down menu.
At 'Preferences' select 'WWW'
Click the tab titled 'Web Graphics'
If you see a check in the box marked 'Use compressed graphics' UNCHECK it!
Click 'Apply' then 'OK' to close it out and apply the changes

damn. thanks for the info. I'm angry, but not surprised.

It's too bad the demo page has dead links. I'm not about to install that junk (AOL) just to see how crappy the .art format with compression is. I'll take their word for it.

Can someone upload a .art file with compression to compare with a normal .jpg?

IMO, it's just another ploy to try to trick people further into thinking their overpriced, slow ass AOL dial up is a worthy investment. Any company that thrives off of inexperienced web user's ignorance will likely try anything to sell their lemon as a peach. Thus, they likely spent millions in developing this .art format, trying to either further trick said users, or re-invent the wheel. Either way, it doesn't affect most of us, since we're savvy enough to not use the junk.

When I'm in the clients office on Monday, I'll take a screenshot of the compressed AOL mess. I'll post it here with a screen of what it's supposed to look like.

Then, you'll see why I was so upset.
