I was wondering if there was a quick (and easy?) way to get a television screen shape? (No, not the dreaded "scanlines". I'm referring to the subtle curved/rounded square shape of a television screen - you also see it in the TV Guide logo.) Any help via Photoshop and/or Illustrator? Already know how to fake it, but it never looks quite right. Any techniques or tutorials to share on this? Thanks! -jca |

select the tv screen and then feather your selection. After that you will have your screen selected and ready. Just delete the corners around it. : )

If you're using Illustrator, make a rectangle. Then under the "effects" go to distort & transform>pucker and bloat. Then bloat it just a tad. Then to go "object" and "expand apearance". If thats not rounded/tv-guide enough for you, go back to effects and use warp>bulge and fool with that a bit. Then "expand appearance" again. OR.... Make a rounded rectangle object and bulge warp it. OR.... Just bulge a standard rectangle if you want sharp corners. And of course "expand appearance" afterwards. |

Why not use the 'Rounded Rectangle Tool'? Make a path and click the make a selection from path button.

The rounded rectangle tool doesn't round the sides, just the corners. Which isn't as close to the tv-guide icon as my method.

Shoot....I have an Illustrator tutorial that is exactly what jca needs. It's pretty simple, but it's quite clever, and could easily be adapted to Photoshop's path Tools. Unfortunately, when I lost free server space— twice (first on Tripod, then on F2S)—I took it down. And stupid me, I coded all the HTML using absolute linking, so I gotta go back in and re-do it (again...should learned after the heinous Tripod incident) so I can upload to my Comcast server space. |

You've exposed my weakness with regards to not knowing Illustrator, so I really appreciate you pointing out those tools for me. It's been so long since I've used Illustrator. Thanks so much for the instructions. Utopian23, let me know when you get your tutorial back on-line, as I'd love to see it and compare methods. Thanks again, -jca |
