I'm using 7 but you can make the grids the same way in 6. As far as the x and y thing, it's probably the same in 6 but I can't remember.

I was thinking people would know some sort of algebra. I used X and Y as a variable. Say if you want one box to be a 7 sq. px., you'd substitute X with 7 (x-7=6) and same with Y, So you'd make a document 6x6pixels for a 7x7 box.

For define pattern, it has to be a quadrilateral with right angles (A rectangle, not a trapezoid, get my drift?). Doing select all should allow you to Define a pattern.

do i do the nlines with the freeform pen tool?

The pen tool is used for something else. You'd use the Line tool (duh...) to make the lines. Make sure to set Anti-aliasing to 0 in the options toolbar.
