I still like using GoLive, or any HTML enabled editer, over notepad anyday. One being my code is color coded. Yah. I can spot the ASP w/o actually have to pay attention.

Forgot a < tag somewhere, it lets you know by the colors. I just fine it easier when i can see the code and the visual output at the same time. I see a problem area i click it and it brings me right to the code. Some pages get awful long and it makes finding stuff lots easier

. I think its silly that people rush into dreamweaver /GoLive / Frontpage w/o actually know anything about HTML or webpages but i don't think its stupid to use any of those editors...well maybe frontpage a little bit

I however, don't like to use image ready to cut up my images, it takes a little bit longer but i cut and name all my images by hand. It make finding what i need easier. So i don't have subpage_01.gif through subpage_.100.gif to search through.

OK I made a layout in PS6 and used the slice tool. Nevermind, I was lost. (yep, a real newbie) I than showed rulers, selected 4 x 4 chunks and copied them to the clip board. How the heck do you open a new project and paste it to it? I made the new project 4 x 4 and it still only pasted a small portion of what I had selected. Any ideas?

BAaaahhhh.......

I always use an editor to layout my frames/tables because it saves a lot of time. Then I can just lay them out in the exact dimensions that I want.

I also use 'em to set up my metatags, background color, link colors, text colors......so on and so forth.....

I basically use them to quickly set up the page, then I go to the text editor and cut out all the crap that they put in, and add my content and so on and so forth....

personally, I only use imageready to code do imagemaps. Mainly because I dont like doing them by hand, even though client side image maps are pretty easy.

my opnions on wysiwyg's

- Frontpage - Possibly the worst web authoring software ever made.
Reason: The code is clunky. And tends to only work well with Internet Explorer - go figure.

- Go Live - Good software. Excellent thought went behind it. But Its missing something for me. I can't really put my finger on it. It just really feels strange for me. No good feel.

- Dreamweaver - Again, good software, but I dont like it mainly because its javascript is bulky. DHTML support is excellent but I rarely use DHTML because writting cross browser scripts is very time consuming and I have a short attention span.

I only named the 3 main ones that I know of.

I got Allaire Homesite the other day and have found it to be fully funtional. I can still write my own code, but if I want, I can layout tables, frames, forms and other elements with advanced options at the click of a button. However, Notepad will still be my favorite HTML editor just because its fun to do.

ZaQ,

when you "copy"....the thing you copied goes to your clipboard...
in photoshop if you copy (ctr+C) Photoshop knows what size the item on the clipboard is, and all you have to do is (ctr+N) to make a new document of that EXACT size....then paste (ctr+V) your clipboard contents into your new document. Save and you have a piece.

I still think slicing and then using the "save for web" option to produce the entire html file first is your best option to get started.

While the past several post did hit on some great stuff, they were opinions and didn't at all touch on the questions you had.

check out these tuts and rescources

This has some good basic info on a little of everything.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

One more question, what is the preferred size for a web document? 700x900. Thanks again........

depends on who your audience is.

Hi res people will generally be around 1024x768, so make your images no larger than 1004 wide.

Others you may want to target will be at 800x600 or below, so make your images no larger than 780 wide.

the reason I knock off 2 pixels is mainly because you dont want people to have to scroll horizontally to view your site. Unless that is you are incorporating that as a layout technique.
