I am trying to place a pic of Elisabeth shue on a different background but the method I am using doesnt seem to work or I may lack the technique. http://www.radiofree.com/cgi-bin/dynamic/ThrowingCandy-shue?picture=30 The method I was sure would work is select a color channel to get some if any contrast between the background and subject. choose high pass filter, Choose Image>Adjust>Levels (I put the levels at about 100 for left and 180 for right) Then using the lasso I alt clicked and selected the inside of subject. With the lasso selection I ctrl deleted to fill with white. Finally I did the best clean up job to rid of any uneeded info that I could. Went to color composite, control clicked to make selection. The selection was horrible and leaked to the outside. I also tried another picture and the same results. http://www.radiofree.com/cgi-bin/dynamic/ThrowingCandy-shue?picture=8 How can this be done so I have a professional looking image to use for creating another picture with different scenery? Thanks Ryan |

you got everything right... but you don't CTR+click the color composite... you CTR+click the dupe channel you did all the work on... you've got the technique you need.

I made some better selections but still No luck capturing the hair. In the ps5 bible it says to follow these instructions. I am able enough to make a selection but the selection is in NO way good. All that work and its the same results as using the stupid lasso for the whole thing! The edged of the hair are NOT picking up.. When I move the selection to a new image it looks like a Kindergartener worked on it. Please help Ryan |

you are just not being patient enough. I know where the technique comes from, it has been in every photoshop bible since version 3.... you have to meticulously use the block eraser to fix the mask channel around the hair... I have spent hours on end trying to make a selection on a single image... You have the technique... you just have to have the patients. keep trying... you'll get it. Re-read Deke's steps..... I think you are going a little astray. |

See....like this crap...sxpd-whatever......who cares? not me, nor probably anybody else. He asked a question, not whether or not he should, as you so elegantly put it: "work at it". Just shut up. |

..... DBM has a good tutorial for this and there are some filters that can help in removing the background from the picture. I also had to work on this alot to achive the removing the background when it inculdes a person's hair or an animals fur. It does takes patience and you have to work at it in order to get it right. Some things i would suggest are using the background easer to edit your extraction. sometimes that does help |

I find it sad that patience can be mispelled so many times.
