Seems like the "advanced" photoshop forum is getting a whole bunch of newbie questions. Maybe its just me, but it seems that way.

alright peeps...the sight I had linked to went down and now, there isn't a link...jeesh...newbie...after much duration and thought, I decided that I just need to take more time to comb over the various stock photography sites, pull some comps and make sure the alteration is more than 30 percent. I do appreciate the responses ...to some degree. Here is a different site that shows what I was trying to attempt. Those massive, gritty-type collages which utilize 3d rendering. Now some images don't even use 3d rendering. I was just trying to figure out -where they really get the inspiration to throw certain accidental elements together and get them to the pseudo-art level.

This is a very popular question, and it can never be answered easily.

There is no single tutorial that will teach you how to do that. If you had to follow tutorials to do it, it would be a whole lot of tutorials put together. Really the only way to do it is to learn photoshop really well, and then apply some of your own creativity. I know that doesn't really answer your question, but there really isn't any other way to answer it.

Generally, they use a lot of blurring techniques, a lot of stock photography... some 3d renderings... scans... custom grunge brushes... distorted type faces... custom shapes... etc.

As far as how they get their inspiration... A lot of them are inspired by each other, which is why they all end up looking pretty much the same.

You have to realize that those guys have been using photoshop for years and most have been doing art for a lot longer than that. You can't expect to reproduce it by following a tutorial on a web site. I know that sucks, but that's the way it is. Just practice, study, learn photoshop, but also learn traditional graphic techniques. Remember photoshop is just a tool.

trust me I know...years of experience are on my side...i've been workin with photoshop for about many years now. My original question wasn't really well thought out. I just see newbies to photoshop spittin this stuff out at an exponential rate. My frustration comes in when I see images like this:

-or-

Note the use of the dodge tool. Although it looks accidental, it is still controlled. I wish that one site, that I was trying to reference first in my thread, was still up. It shows the total control that I'm talking about. Also note the comped images. I don't have access ($) to the higher rezed stock photos and that adds to my frustration. I also notice the content. In some other comps, the images used are so, how should I say, spuratic and so unrelated that it just boggles my mind on how the artist chose those for the comp and arranged them accordingly.

Still, I think that my original question should have been clearly defined as to: Where do they get the inspiration?

Well like I said before, a lot of it is each other... which results in very similar images.

I'd say if you look for stock photos though, you can look for certain angles or textures that you would want to use in your composition. Pictures like that usually have on main element that you focus on, and everything else spreads out from there. So I would pick an element to focus on, then find pictures that have good angles or textures or colors to complement that. If you can't find good stock photos, make your own. Just go out and shoot interesting angles and so forth. Other than that I would say it just takes a lot of experimenting and a lot of moving things around until you are happy with it. Some guys work on images like that for weeks.

Thanx Deker! I appreciate your patience and understanding. I find your approach to be defusing my frustration.

oh, and one more thing (and I hope they see this)...and I don't want to seem mean or anything... but czak's link doesn't work and i've seen side-fx work and I honestly don't think that he should be criticizing me for anything. Ha, calling me a newbie.

:D
