The concept is good. It is cool to see you and your wife's little mini sites next to each other. As the others said, you really need to make it work in different resolutions, if you intend on people wanting to visit regularly. Even people with resolutions at or higher than 1024 probably do not have their browser window maximized. I am at 1280 x 1024, but my browser is usually less than 800 x 600, because I hate having my browser maximized to fill the whole screen. Plus people have sidebars and other things which take up more horizontal space. For instance, the Hotlist in Opera, which can take up quite a bit of room, but holds my email, history, contacts, bookmarks, and more. So it is always open, further decreasing the amount of horizontal space available for the web sites. Another thing, your site basically does not work in Opera at all. The layers overlap, things are misaligned, etc. Again if you are hoping to have people come back again and again to your site, you should try to make it work for everyone not just your own computer and browsing habits. Nice to see another Tennessean here, I'm in Chattanooga. |

its not too bad, I'm at 1152x854 or whatever it is, I dunno about the crazy people around here and their giant monitors :( although it doesn't quite fill the entire screen because I do like to expand it all the way, but anyway .. yeah I think I like it despite green not being my favorite color

Separate pop-up windows are really a pain. Just load the page in the same window. Don't use frames. Your menus are all goofy. You should make your page taller than (???100 pixels), so you don't have to scroll everything. Basically, you need to throw that design away, and start over, with usability in mind.

site does not work right in mozilla, but if you users all use explorer, i guess that is ok. splash pages are no good. i would love the see the dueling blogs side by side right on the homepage. it takes three clicks to actually get to a blog entry. more coming later, gotta go to a movie... |

of course you're not the only one who uses windows. For some reason, people think that pop-ups are good, but most people find them annoying. That's why there's so many pop-up killers. "splash pages" are more or less useless, and just take up a lot of bandwidth. In general, if you dont need it on your page, you shouldn't have it. I'm not saying you don't know photoshop, or html. I just think you need to test your layout a little more. Make it a little more accessible. YOU may think your menus are simplistic, because you designed them, and of course, you know exactly how they work. I was able to use the menus, but they seemed a little strange. Even when there were no links to click on, there was a whole list there. A good test to see how good your layout is, is to have an older person test it. They, not being as used to computers and such, are very easily confused by little things not being standard. Not to say, you have to do your page the same as everyone else......of course not. But there are basic things people expect. I'm not trying to be rude here, and sorry if i was a little too blunt before. I'm just trying to give you some useful pointers. |

A pop-up is a window that pops up when you click on a link. Normally it is not a full browser window, just a frame around the page. And in my opinion, every pop-up is unsolicited. I never want them. A pop-up ad is the thing that pops up when you first load a site. But clicking and having something pop-up is just as annoying. If the site is only for you and a couple of family members, why are you posting it for critique on a public forum, then use the excuse that it is "only for me and my family" when we tell you things that can be improved about it? You need to learn that web sites are not software. They shouldn't have "requirements". The whole point of the internet is for the information to be accessible to everyone. Whether they use IE, opera, mozilla, aol, a PDA, a cell phone, a text based browser, a screen reader, etc. And there is a HUGE percentage of computer users out there who have no idea how to change their screen resolution, or even know what that means or that it is possible. When you post requirements to view your web site and then say you don't care if your site looks like **** to other people, you come off as extremely arrogant, and as a total amateur. I know you aren't doing this for a living or anything (I hope not), but still, don't expect anyone other than your immediate family to enjoy the site. If you would listen to us and make your site viewable on other computers besides the one you use yourself, and got rid of the splash page and one or two other things, I think you would have a pretty nice site. But you seem too stubborn to do that. |
