I think that if everyone built it "right", all their websites would look too much alike.

IMO everyone's websites look alike already, melvins.

I agree with charm, web designers should stick with what works and don't add dumb bells and whistles that just add more variables and things to screw up.

Design principle #1 according to me (and others): K.I.S.S. ( Keep It Simple Sh*thead. )

I thought it was Keep it Simple Stupid... :(

I don't really have to worry about resolution crap, it's all a bunch of bs... my splashes are designed so that it'll only be cut off if you're looking at my site using a PDA...

I think it is quite silly, charm. You are not alone. Chances are, if you have to write a script to detect a browser and display a different version of your site, something isn't right.

It may look cool to have a gigantic background that fits the browser window, but chances are it will only look right on your computer. Plus it will probably take a long time to download.

A lot of people don't maximize their browser windows (me) so if you run a script that detects my resolution, it will say I'm running 1280 x 1024, but my browser window is actually around 800 x 600. And even then it is never *exactly* 800 x 600 or anything. 'Cause I just resize it to a size I like for the current page. Plus, some people display more bars and buttons on the top of the browser than others. Some even download extra bars like that google thing. So there is really no possible way to write a script that can take all of that into the equation and then spit out an image that fits it perfectly. You just need to give in to the limitations of web design, and design around them. Don't try to make a bunch of javascript hacks to work your way around them.

Here's my rule #2:

You can please some of the people [sh*theads] some of the time, but you can't please all of the people [sh*theads] all of the time.

i.e. what pank said.

Why do people even need a splash? 99% of the time I encounter a site with a splash page I stop loading the page or move my mouse around until I find a link that takes me to the main page--I don't even bother looking at the splash.

splashes in fairness have fallen in numbers. Unless your splash is very interesting and might have a theme to the site, i dont think they should be used at all.

I mainly designed my site for other people i know who do graphic design or are arty who might be interesting in what i have to offer. I also did it for self-gratification.

a house needs plumbing, electricity, a foundation, windows, etc and all houses don't look the same.
