I've just entered hell! I just bought a new house this weekend, and just found out today that I can't get DSL or Cable!!!!!!!! Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had known that I wouldn't have bought the house!! Does anyone know anything about satellite service? I know it's expensive to buy the equipment, but I don't really have a choice. I can't go with out broadband. Does anyone know anything about the speed or service or anything though? |

sorry to hear the news, deker, that really sucks. I'm also stuck here with my 56k and AOL while living with my parents. :( http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/29/satellite.services.idg/ http://www.cnet.com/internet/0-3762-8-7287680-5.html?tag=st.is.3762-8-7287680-1.txt.3762-8-7287680-5 http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/computing/12/29/satellite.services.idg/ *the last one's the best* |

Wallus, off-topic, but how far north of the Iowa border are you? Between where I am and Mankato, supposed to be around 10-14 inches of snow today. Right now it's just a giant sheet of ice though. |

i am in Eden Prairie, and that is almost exactly 100 miles from the border. It was snowing for the better half of the day today during school, we got something like 6-10 inches, with some more coming down right now. The weather guy just said 10-15 more, but i might have misunderstood him. All I want is for school to be canceled tomorrow! :D :D

I wish i went to school there. My city has a really good plow system or whatever, so my school hardly ever closes. :(

Well I'm about exactly 10 miles south of the border (at work). Snow sucks, winter sucks, cold sucks. Turns out all that snow went north of us...woohoo! Still raining pretty hard, and that is supposed to freeze again late this afternoon. All our schools let out at 10:00 this morning, because all the roads were frozen solid, but all the ice melted by 11:00. |

Welcome to my world As far as satellite believe me I have done some homework on it. I'm in the same dial up hell as you. If you want my opinion try to wait it out. For two way satellite service you are going to spend some major bucks for equipment and it really is not close to dsl or cable. Much better than dial up but I still have held off on that. Not to mention most companies use the FAP (fair access policy). So if you download a lot in one day your bandwidth is exceeded and you are basically shut down for 24 hours :( I'd stay clear for now. Check out dslreports.com and search around. Also try to find a local area wireless service. I have a few popping up by me now. Service is almost T1 speeds and cheap. |

It's hard for me to belive that in a city such as Chattanooga that they wouldn't have cable or DSL available. Out here in the cornfield that I live in, we have 2 city-wide cable providers (+ 1 more thinking about coming in) and 2 DSL providers (not including MSN High-Speed). We have 4 high-speed wireless providers. We have about 8 dialup providers. This is in a city of less than 12,000 people. But this is also good for us out here, because there is so much competitition, that for 1.5MB downstream cable, you only pay $20/month. Less than AOL.
