Have any of you used this before?

www.webedpro.com

It's a server-side WYSIWYG HTML editor... I think it just edits any existing files you have in the 'content' directory. The online demo is pretty impressive, it functions just like Word.

I'm not wanting to use this for myself, but almost every client I've ever had wants to update their own web site, and this would be a cheap and easy way for them to do it without worrying about databases and things like that. Just go to the panel, log in, and start typing, copy/pasting, inserting images and tables, links and lists....

It's only $145, which isn't much considering how much the client is already paying for the site. I can easily justify that cost to allow them to edit their own site. Or maybe charge them $500 up front for the ability to do that... Since I would potentially be losing some update fees and things like that.

Of course, one concern I have is it's code... It's pretty sloppy from what I can tell. All the tags are in upper case, it uses font tags, etc. I wonder if there is a way to customize the code it generates and allow it to use stylesheets? I'm going to be e-mailing the company about that....

Just wanted to know if anyone had heard of it or used it before. It has a nice online demo, but it's not the same as first hand experience.

Not Bad.. But still I'd prefer the normal way. You'll never know, the client might screw the whole thing.

Its in Perl and ASP, not really prefered....

"The Normal Way"?

Having the ability to update their own web site would be a HUGE selling point to a client. Especially for such a cheap amount.

I've tried multiple ways of doing it in the past, including buying a copy of dreamweaver for the client and teaching them how to use it, and then they destroyed the site and ended up calling me to fix it anyway. Other content management systems with databases and things like that are way, way too expensive and complicated.

The client would only use this to do simple editing like posting some news... correcting typos... posting new job openings... changing phone numbers... etc.

I also thought about using PHP to import HTML documents into a site template that I create. The HTML would hold all the content, and I would only allow the client access to update those HTML pages. That way even if they screwed something up, it wouldn't destroy the entire site layout. That would probably work the best actually.

Why do you think PERL / ASP isn't preferred?

I added my XP camera's into their test page.

Deker, remember that page I showed you that allowed the client to update their news. I'll sell you that for a couple grand. Open license, so you can resell to whomever you want.

Couple grand... pthh.

I really don't have much of a problem with ASP. Other than it isn't supported on my hosting company. So it would be pretty much useless to me.

And I like this web edit pro thing because I don't have to set up a database or any crazy stuff like that.

You don't have to with my solution either. All you need to put in there is SSI and .txt files.

And it's just an encoded XML file with the usernames/passwords

Interesting, but if I remember correctly, it doesn't haven't any way to insert images, or rearrange text in a wysiwyg view. It was just a plain text box.

you can change it to anything you want to use it for. You could use it upload images, and arrange them in tabular form....you could use it to basically do an entire page layout if you liked, you just have to adapt it to your needs. I just simply use it to let the appropriate people log in and update their news, that is the only thing I want them to be able to change for awhile, until I give them ALL lessons on how to change bigger things.

But the thing you showed me only had a text area and a save button. How can all that other stuff be added? I don't want to get in there and mess with code. I hate code. Thats why I like this web edit thing. It's ready to go. Bam.
