OK, I need to get some feedback from you all about something. What do you think is a fare price for web design? Should it be by the hour, page, site, or what. If you could post some of your work and tell me how much you would charge that would be great.

Thanks

for me, i count by the pages and graphics...
you can also charge extra services like domain registration, updating, hosting, etc

i won't count by time cause its not that fair, someone take a long time to do something while another can do the same thing in a shorter time.

I'll count by site/page
the one i'm doing now(view from showcase section, layouts)
layouts

edited.... prices removed due to some stuff i read somewhere...

For design I charge by the job. It's not fair to charge by the hour because I might be thinking about a design in my head for 3 days, but only take 2 hours to do it in Photoshop. So that isn't fair to me. Then I charge hourly for doing updates after the initial design. I have a minimum price that I won't go below, which usually includes hosting for the first year. I don't charge by the page or graphic, though I use page number as a basic gauge. For my base price I'll usually do up to 10 or so "pages". That's basically just to gauge how much info I'll have to put into the template, etc. Then if they add in extra stuff, then the charges continue to go up. If I have to come to their office to set up e-mail accounts or something, then it's an hourly charge with a one hour minimum.

The place I work for charges hourly. No, it was not my idea, and no, I do not think it is the best way to go about things, because if I put 8 hours into initial design, development, and heirarchy, then they already have a pretty big bill piled up. Generally we work with local companies who don't have a lot of money budgeted for these things, so I end up keeping the site very simple. I do not sacrifice quality, and generally tell people that if they want a web site, they are going to have to up their budget, because it will ALWAYS cost more than people want to spend...of course they could always get their 13-year-old nephew to do it for free, but most companies are (I say most, but it's probably not most), smarter than that, and would rather have a professional do it.

My strategy is very similar to deker's...

I charge a flat rate for the initial concept, design.

Then by the hour for the content and scripting as well as updates... daily, weekly, monthly.... whatever.

Like deker... I'm not going to tell you exactly what I charge... for several reasons.

I will tell you that what I charge alot of times changes according to what the client has bugeted, but there is a number I will not go below also.

i go on a project rate based on how long i think it will take me, if the client has tons of changes, additions, etc. than i add to that. why should i charge by the hour and be penalized because i can do something faster than the next guy?

i charge by the project as well. the freelance work i do is usually for clients with pretty tight budgets so it just works out easier that way. plus i work pretty fast.

i make websites at work all day so i am a little pickier with the work i do freelance. (just so my life isn't consumed by web design)

now if i could just hire myself as a freelancer at work ... i would get paid to do the work and paid to manage the project! i need to set up a phantom design firm!
