When do high end companies suddenly get all benefactor on us normally? When theres something in it for them. Adobe hopes to capture a large section of the market by making users convert/switch/stay with Adobe products. It would be like claiming Bill Gates was thinking about internet users when he bundled IE with Windows.
Yah that's a good point. |

How is that a good point? It has nothing to do with Microsoft bundling IE with Windows. Adobe created a new image format, which is free, which means that nobody can benefit from it indirectly as you specified. All imaging software companies can use the new image format in their software also. Nobody is forcing you do buy Adobe software to use the new image format.
How is that a good point?
Well look at pdfs. You don’t need to buy any software to open a pdf and from what I understand you can purchase other software that can create them. But aren’t you more likely to buy Adobe Acrobat? I think he made a good point because Adobe’s most likely pushing the DNG format so people are more likely to “convert/switch/stay with Adobe products.” *cough* photoshop CS. I don’t mind switching to DNG especially if it’s more flexible. I also don’t think that makes the DNG a bad move but it’s hard to deny there isn’t any intentions by Adobe to capture a piece of that market. That’s what I was agreeing with. |

The difference is that an equal to PDF did not exist before PDF. PDF started a static document format, of which an equal did not exist at the time. What Adobe has done this time is created a standard, as every high-end camera maker currently uses their own RAW format, and Adobe was having trouble supporting all the different formats within Adobe products. I think you're going overboard by assuming that Adobe is "doing it all for the money" when they're claiming compatibility issues. I doubt that anyone interested in RAW format photos is using anything but Photoshop anyways.

Why do you guys act like they are somehow bad if they are in it for the money? They're a freaking business, the whole point of their existence is to make money any way they can. And tons of apps can make PDF's, including the Mac OSX operating system, Corel Draw, etc. OSX can open PDF's without acrobat reader also. Hell even Google can open and search PDFs. Leave your conspiracy theories for the political threads... Gees. |
