I checked Apple's website and reset it and everything seems to be working fine. I still haven't had a chance to upload all of my sons onto it yet (as thats when it froze up) because I'm at work, but I'll give it another shot when I get home. If not, back to Best Buy.

Deker, or any othe iPod experts... when I go to upload my itunes library to my iPod, it only adds like 90 out of my 1650 songs, regardless if I do the automatic or manual. Then it freezes and I have to yank it off the dock when it tells me not to and reset it. Is something wrong? My files are mp3's, and not apples A?? format or whatever it is. Does that matter? I'm thinking I might just have a buggy unit...

Yeah if it's happening consistenly, definitely call Apple about it, or just return it. That's very not-normal. The iPod plays mp3's and aac files... it doesn't matter which you have.

Yea, I've done some research and found that it might be a chipset issue with XP machines, particularly VIA. Supposedly theres a MS patch that might solve the trick. I'm not quite sure to find what kind of chipset my Firewire card is... I believe its integrated, so its probably and Intel Springdale (I think thats my computers chipset). If this fails, I'm going to try USB and see if that works. USB 2.0 and Firewire are comparable in speed I believe. Hopefully something will work.

*points at the Apple Protection Plan* I told you so. Well, with my 3G 15gig iPod, I never had any problems with freezing or anything like that, except sometimes my contrast gets buggy, my volume gets buggy, etc, but no problems with the PC/iPod linkup, so I would first call Apple, even if you don't have the protection plan yet, you are covered 30 days, they will push the protection plan up your ass and pull it out of your mouth hoping you buy it, if you do, they are also a bit nicer to you because they are getting comission. :D But yea, I would call, and see what they tell you to do.

Thanks msz, I'll call Apple first thing tomorrow morning. As for the protection plan, I will probably get it, it seems worth it. I've read dozens of posts on ipodlounge and Apple forums concering the same problem and its supposedly a chipset issue with the firewire card. Apparently Apple failed to thurougly test the 4G for PC's. Also, from what I've read, USB 2.0 ought to work fine, and its proven faster so I'll probably just use that until a firmware update fixes the firewire issue. Thanks again for the tip.

Okay, I took the ipod back, got a new one, and ta-da, it works flawlessly. I even ran a cable through my dash to hook it up to my aux-supported cd player and it sounds oh so sweet. I love it!
