I didn't really sign up for GMail because of the space.

I signed up because you had to check your hotmail account every 30 days or they shut it down and you only have to check GMail every nine months. I don't check my email that often so that's why.

Also, I like their clean interface without ads or crap. It's fast loading and straightforward.

Plus @gmail.com is a lot easier than @youvegotpost.com

Yeah... I really don't get this whole gmail craze... I'm fine with my comcast account and my hotmail account... I never needed to send gargantuan attachments...

Most ISPs provide you with a nice account; if you get hosting you can usually setup a few POP ones... Yahoo and Hotmail are fine too...

That's what direct file transfer is for. I routinely send and receive files of 80+MB with clients via iChat.

If need to transfer a large file (or receive one) I just do it via FTP... with awesome hosting that I got as payment for a quick design

Then there are things like Direct Connect and BitTorrent as well...

I have all the space I would ever need on my server, but the three webmail apps suck, plus it takes up space I could use for hosting a web site or something, rather than my email just sitting there (I use IMAP).

With Gmail I get 1gb for free that isn't taking up space on my server. Plus the interface is really great, by far the best of any webmail app I've ever used, including yahoo and hotmail and all the others. There are no ads except a few text ads on the right side occassionaly, as opposed to hotmail where there are more ads than there are interface elements. On Hotmail basically everything except the Send button is an ad. Plus it puts a tagline at the bottom of your email, as does Yahoo, which looks really unprofessional. I setup my old addresses to forward to my Gmail account, and set the "Reply-To" to go to my old addresses as well, so unless you're looking at the headers for the email, most people won't even notice that I'm using a Gmail account. But it's still free. Hooray.
