I have never heard Yellowcard before, never even heard the name before.

I can't stand the term "sellout". It's the absolute lamest thing in the world. Blink 182...they have been around for years doing their musical thing. I don't listen to them often, but when I do, my toe taps. They make money, and lots of it. So everyone screaming sellout, well, it's probably because you are bitter that you have to shop at Walmart...Do I like Avril and Brittney? Not on your life. Do I complain about them? Not going to even waste my breathe talking about them. But you know what? They can "sellout" as much as they want cause its putting food on their plates. It's great business and I respect that. Don't like it, don't listen, don't complain because someone out there thinks you are a meathead for the music you like.

Pearl Jam -- must be sellouts, they are on the radio. TOOL -- sellouts as well hey? Ramones? talk about being trendy within a genre...but who the hell cares? Oh, everyone does, because instead of just listening and grooving to their tunes, they complain about the rest of the music industry.

Pop music has millions of fans and I don't believe seeing one gun to anyones head to make them listen to it.

Dog Fashion Disco
Buckethead
Modest Mouse
Nick Cave
Clutch
Sublime
Primus
Tool
Pearl Jam
The White Stripes

Look at that playlist, it completely "sells out" doesn't it?

Oh yeah, Pank, is that the new Slipknot? I have their first album, hated the second and have totally not even payed attention to them lately, but I keep hearing amazing things about this new album.

Slipknot *shudder*. The only band to ever come out of Iowa, and I can't stand their music. The only song of theirs that I liked (the only one with a harmony) was 'Wait and Bleed', of which I only like the chorus. Sorry Pank, don't mean to pee on your only post in this thread.

Slipknot's Duality is a good song, I like it. But I hate the way they wear masks and all that. Takes away from the music, if you are watching the video or something.

Corey Taylor has an amazing voice which we got a glimpse on in Wait and Bleed and a small part of Me Inside, but I find he screams too much. I am going to give his new band Stone Sour a shot. I heard a song and its just him "singing", very nice.

Owned.

I like Yellowcard, Blink-182, and most of Avril Lavigne's stuff. I also like Evanescence, No Doubt, and quite a few other bands they actually play on the radio. I'm not of the belief that just because something has mass-market appeal and is commercially successful, it automatically sucks.

I dont believe that those bands automatically suck because they have mass-market appeal and are commercially successful. I believe that those bands automatically suck because... well, I think they suck.

The truth is that it's not that we think bands suck simply because they're commercially successful. It just happens to be a trend that a majority of the music that is commercially successful now sucks. It's not the reason, it's just a coincidence.

Why do you blame our distaste on reasons that don't have any relation to the prevalent point - they make bad music. I've tried to look at this both from the view of a listener and the view of a musician, and I just can not find any appeal to it.

From the view of a listener: Overall, a lot of their songs sound similar. The style with so many bands just don't vary. They don't change it up, they do nothing to push music to its limits.

On the musician's side, the theory behind the songs are completely nothing special. The bands don't display any technical talent, nor do they seem to put any life into their music to make it flow. They just bang away at powerchords.

Of course, technical talent and theory are not as important as the number 1 rule behind music. Duke Ellington once said, "If it sounds good, it sounds good. If it sounds bad, it sounds bad."

And the truth is that I find that pop-punk sounds bad. Of course, this is completely up to personal taste. You can take your pop-punk bands if you want. I on the other hand would rather experience the sound of Jimi Hendrix channeling God's voice through a guitar and singing about how the moon makes sweet love to the sea, as opposed to hearing a silly little punk kid have nothign better to whine about and so talks about his dumped girlfriend and hammering out powerchords that exemplify the skills of a person who has been in possession of a guitar for 2 days.

This is not to say that every pop-punk band sucks. For example - I dont know if they fall into the category - but lately I find myself drawn to Coheed and Cambria. Their first cd blew, but their second one is way different and at times surprised the hell out of me (point in case: "The Camper Velourium I: Faint of Hearts").

Oh and Mikey - Maroon5 - you'd at first think that that band sucks, what with the cliched punk name and all. But man do they own. They have some soulful stuff, man... they are among the more - or most - talented bands today.

I don't listen to music to have some sort of spiritual experience because of the way someone plays a guitar or writes lyrics. I like catchy tunes that make me happy. Which is why everyone likes different things. I don't know why you people that hate popular music have to criticize it so much though. Why can't you just like what you like, as others have mentioned, instead of bashing what everyone else likes? I don't go around bashing all those punk bands that axiom mentioned, or slipknot, or any other bands that I don't like. I just don't like them. If others do, great.

Your whole post was nothing but criticizing pop music and the people that make it. Why can't you just let it be and like what you like? Come up with reasons why people should give the music you like a try, rather than just bashing everyone over the head with how much you hate every band on MTV because they aren't jimi hendrix. and of course they don't play like jimi hendrix, who alive today can? that's the reason he's arguably the best...

You can pee anytime you like ;)
Never been a Slipknot fan (still really am not). I'd take tool or Disturbed (good ol' Chicago boys) over them any day.

The duality single just kicks ass. I don't really agree with their presence or over the top occult BS (see Marilyn Manson) but good kick ass music is good kick ass music. And duality falls into that category to me.

But then again so does the vines "ride" single. Stupid apple commercial cost me $.99 at itunes ;) Just good ol' simple guitar riff's that I picked up in a few minutes but still made my arm hair stand up while playing it along with the cd...

Really? I've heard people like the Vines and think they are the best, but I really can't stand that singer's voice. I haven't researched into the band and listened to their other tracks, so maybe I'm being ignorant, but I just don't like them. Whether they are popular or not does not matter to me. It's the music and content of that music that matters. That's all that really matters with a band. They love playing music, they love expressing their feelings. Great. But all this 'this band is good because they are successful' is a bunch of crap. Any band can be good. No matter if they have that 'fake-punk' sound or not.

I'll bet I've repeated everything that has already been said. Oh well.

Never did I say anyone had to be like jimi hendrix. I said I'd rather listen to his music because it has emotion and passion in the way he plays the guitar, as opposed to pop-punk music of today. I completely understand that no one will ever rival Jimi Hendrix, but it is a bleak world for music if no one even tries to come close anymore. No one puts in the effort to better their own music. They realize that by not evolving they can still make money and that's the horror in it.

Why can't you just like what you like, as others have mentioned, instead of bashing what everyone else likes?

Why? Because I'm sick of seeing people with the no talent make millions and billions of dollars making music for the general public, while the truly genius musicians and talents - some of whom are exceptionally gifted - are making table scraps doing gigs at local bars in downtown New York. It's sickening, but such is the industry. You have to milk it for what it's worth.
