Check out Norah Jones' website. I think the designer did quite an elegant job of embedding the media. Look at the Media page.

That's because her site is Flash. Hell if he could convert the site to Flash it would take him the better part of 3 minutes to make the music uninterrupted through navigation:

Not sure if I missed it somewhere here but what about a non scrollable perfectly sized i-frame? It could load just like you have it now but instead of a popup it is set in a 75x75 or whatever size you like i-frame? Fit's right in the page and you could keep the flow "I think"... Just an idea.

amount fig knows about iframes == 0

but it sounds good, willing to give it a shot. can i leave that iframe there over each of the pages and navigating from one html doc to another won't change it?

Yes. you could even put it inside a [HTML]
