Have any of you guys seen the smart car by Daimler-Chrysler featuring a built-in iPod? It won't hit the states until 2006, from what I read, but anyone else out there seen this car. You can view it here Pretty slick ride if you ask me. |

Whats the chances by 06 the iPod will be old hat??? (one can only hope :D ) Slick ride? not sure. Though it would be fun to screw around with. Id like find out how tight that turning radius really is :D . I could probably do a donut around a dime with that thing! (thats is if i could fit my big ass in it first....looks kinda small) |

Those little Smart Cars are all over Europe. They're pretty snazzy but really f'ing small. Like really small. I heard they were co-designed by Swatch (yes the watch company). I don't think it will do well in the U.S. besides in the cities, but even the cities in the U.S. do not require the compactness and agility of the Smart Car. Anyways, who would get an mp3 player just for their car?! If you can't take it out it would be really dumb. |

I think cars of that size are a great idea. Not only are they perfect for the city but they'll help the traffic on the freeways too.

The Smart cars all have the Mercedes star in front - so I guess they were made by Mercedes...or whatever the name is these days they're not that small inside - I've been in one of those. The seats are spacious enough for my big ass (really big ass hihi). But anyway - they are all over the place - mostly used to advertise stuff - they can go all places, even turn them on the sidewalk if the street isn't wide enough (nobody minds 'cause they're cute and small). They slap a huge plastic can of redbull on top - or they use them for pizza delivery or for fast interventions (doctors, technic assistance). I think they could do fairly well in the states too - I mean - you guys have a lot of driving space...but the parking seems to be a big issue - at least in major cities... (here the pizza places stack them like cordwood in a simple garage - no need for a lot of space...) And the fuel consumption is a joke - 1.5 liters for 100km (I dunno how much that is in gallons or miles). Also - notice the little grooves on the side on the "conteiner" where the Ipod goes? You can take it out... |

I doubt it will do that well in America, at least at first. Most people in the US are obsessed with huge engines and huge SUVs and huge Vans and huge 4-door sedans. A car that small will be thought of as a toy. And I'm not that sure I'd want to be driving around in a little go-kart sized car on our streets, then get sandwiched between two gigantic SUVs. An SUV would crush that little thing into a pancake.

Yeah, for purely safety reasons, if a Smart Car got in an accident with an SUV you would be dead without a doubt the SUV person would probably not even see you nor feel that much of an impact. It's physics.

well - bah to you! - us European types, I guess we're more sensitive and delicate hah! We don't need huge cars and huge parking lots 'cause we have huge......ugh....yeah... But those little cars really do well here...I guess the new world isn't ready for them yet:D |

The only way the U.S will ever get smart enough to convert to something as practical as that is if there was hardly any oil left and we were forced by gun point. It's sad. I think speeds also a factor. I read that some of those cars being built over here can only get up to 50 miles per hour.
