I've heard that PCs are overall better for standard usage. While Macs are better for things relating to digital media, video editing, art, and so forth. Why is that?

The people that type "mac vs. pc" are the ones that turn it into mac vs. pc threads. If you are "so sick of them", the don't click on the thread titles that are obviously going to start a discussion between the two systems. Gees.

Paladin, both do basically the same thing. There isn't anything major you "can" do with a Mac that you "can't" with a Windows machine, and vice versa. In my opinion/experience the Mac is a much easier to use system, much more elegant, friendly, integrated, powerful, etc. Other people have other opinions. The reason Macs are thought of as creative machines is because the desktop publishing industry started on Macs, the first drawing programs were on Macs, even the first version of MS Word and Excel were on Macs. So the printing/video/audio industries have always used them because in the beginning they were the only option. And then those artists stuck with them because they were familiar with them, and felt more comfortable using them for their daily work.

I personally think that Macs are much better for general use than Windows, because of their ease of use and integration like I mentioned, stability, immunity to viruses (not immune, but there aren't any OSX viruses right now), no spyware/adware, etc. You don't have to worry about visiting web sites and getting all kinds of pop-ups and adware installed on your system, and you don't have to worry about worms or email attachments, etc. Everything you are likely to need comes pre-installed on a Mac, and it's all top-quality software. The iLife suite handles every type of digital media you'd like to do, Mail is a very good email client in my opinion... You have Safari for web browsing, iSync to sync with your PDA/Cellphone, iCal for keeping a schedule, they usually include a few games, a money managing program, etc. That is more than enough for most people, without getting into specialized industries like web design, printing, hardcore gaming, etc.

one big plus when it comes to video, digital photography, is that macs are TRUE plug-n-play, not drivers/reboot/finish install/reboot stuff. and sometimes that will just make your day

well, for standard use, pc's provide way more options in the way of software and things (possibly compatability..etc). Though in my opinion, being a pc guy, macs would be better for standard use cause of the stuff metioned above ^.

But overall i agree with dek, its all the same these days. Its now just preference.

Though, backing up dekers post,

The reason Macs are thought of as creative machines is because the desktop publishing industry started on Macs, the first drawing programs were on Macs, even the first version of MS Word and Excel were on Macs

Photoshop was developed on mac i believe, back in the 80's. It was made (for film i think) by Industrial Light & Magic (the George Lucas Co). So while bill gates was off playin with himself...the software already existed and was commonly used.

Well every time Microsoft tries to make a new software package preinstalled they get sued, so that's not a fair comparison. True, but not fair.
