I'm setting up my home Airport network tomorrow (finally got all the stuff in through FedEx). YAY! Macs all over! Come sit in my driveway! Access the net at 3 Megabits/sec!
Wow - thats pretty amazing. When I grow up I'm definately going to have something like that. Do you have to worry about drive-by crackers or anything like that?
No one is forcing you to read the Mac threads MJ, and this is actually a very Windows oriented board, or has been in the past anyway. Every other design oriented forum I visit is made up of a whole lot more Mac users than there are here.

Besides, I seem to remember you recently starting an Apple related thread yourself, so what's up with that?
Yes. Guilty as charged. It was just an observation... most of the Mac/Apple threads around here are positive... mine really wasn't. Whatever, I mean, this is the miscelleneous forum...

:D

OK, guys. Lets stop the lets-have-mac-vs.-windows-threads vs. lets-not-have-mac-vs.-windows-threads threads. :D

Mac vs. PC threads really only piss me off until someone says "let's stop the Mac vs. PC threads".

Utopian, wireless is awesome! I set mine up when I got the powerbook. It reaches about 125ft down the road. I was browsing the internet from a stop sign!

I guess that comes in handy when you have a really short commute to work.

Congrats on the new addition!

Utopian23, I use OS X at the magazine. By far the most superior OS I have ever used. However, I am only using 10.2 at work. I look forward to Expose on 10.3. I love it on my gf's iBook.

As for stability, nothing makes me happier on those times when Indesign crashes on me and my 100mb Photoshop file remains intact.

We are buying the Airport setup for the house (2 iBooks now). But until we get it, consider me a decoration of your driveway. :D

No worries at all. Not with 128 bit encrypting algos and stupidly complex passwords.

Plus, even if somebody gains my network access, my drives would be completely invisible. Plus, I live in a suburban neighborhood, and I'd be surprised if 1 in 500 folks within 10 miles even know how to configure a wireless network, let alone know how to war drive, find and break into one.

My father tried setting up a wireless network a few months ago, but it was too glitchy to be of any use. The internet went off at it's own will :/ Not sure if it has to do with the brand of it (linksys), as I've heard a lot of bad stuff about it regarding pc games.

We just ended up drilling a bunch of holes to the basement, and painstakingly got a 50foot wire down here.

It's weird though, I've never actually used a mac aside from the cheap ones at school/libraries.

my wireless setup has been perfect. Never had any downtime or anything.

I hear WEP encryption is pretty much worthless though. There are cracking programs out there that can break it after monitoring like a gig of traffic.
