I agree that it really isn't the regular members place to point out threads posted in the wrong areas, or sigs that are too large, etc. I don't think the report this post button is appropriate either though, as that button will email every single moderator immediately and alert them to the post. It should be used for someone that posted a link to porn or something equally against the rules. A simple PM to me or one of the other active mods like Zyconium or Casual will usually get things like that taken care of in a matter of minutes. I check the forum probably every 10 minutes except for the 6-7 hours that I sleep every night, so normally I or one of the other mods will catch something simple like a misposting before it really bothers anyone or gets out of control.

And about not commenting in threads in the wrong area, go ahead and comment, the thread will be moved to the correct spot soon enough, and then your reply will already be there.

I personally haven't been critiqueing work lately because of time... Yes I said I check the forum every ten minutes, but that's usually just to skim thread titles and click on a few posts while I'm waiting for a file to save or something. I generally can't sit there for 10 minutes at a time and give a thoughtful reply to anyone's work, unfortunately. And as for posting work, I still generally post my stuff when it is almost done, but because of the "that's cool" replies that this thread has been about, I am usually already finished by the time I post it here and have been messaging with people that I know will give me good honest opinions before posting it here. And I think a lot of the other older members have started doing similar things. And it's probably a bad thing that we are doing that as well, since we are limiting the opinions we are receiving to the same old people over and over again, instead of public opinion in the open forum, but again, you have that one or two word reply problem. So I guess it's kind of a catch 22 in a way. But if we all start trying to improve things like we've talked about then I think it would all come together in time.

Now it does feel good to have a handful of people come in and say it all looks good, but its so superficial and the intention is so see-through that it's insulting. POST COUNTS are all that seem to matter.

DISCLAIMER: I have not read this thread so this may have been stated earlier.

I have to disagree with you on one aspect of your overall point. I don't think most of the people who post "awesome d00d!" or "cool" do so just for a post count. They think it looks cool and to them, so they post "cool." Yeah, I agree with you that it happens too often, but you are attributing it to the wrong reason in my opinion.

But of course I could be wrong.

EDIT: I think people can discern the pros from the newbies and take their advice as such. They can click on your website link and see who you are. Segregation would just be another private forum with only a couple dedicated members and the boards would go dead.

EDIT AGAIN:
Lots of good points being made here. It got a bit off topic, but for the most part, it seems the "senior members" are agreeing. It is curious that a few high profile "new members" have yet to say anything about this. They reply to every other thread, but not this one. Don't hide.

If this was a thinly veiled reference to me; school has been really hectic lately and I haven't even touched a computer in 2 days (until now).

k time for the semi present guy to step in ,

i joined teamps because i got photoshop thought it was going well, and yeh i was a post whore, some people obviously thought i was a n00b, i got that vibe, anyway, the point of teamps is to help people get better, the bottom line some of us are saying is , explain why you dont like it dont post "nah i dont like it" ,
imo people need to read the friggin rules, does teamps have a ban policy ? triple post? or a "suspension" ive you want to put it that way, ban for a certain amount of time, just to tell the new ones not to do the wrong deed they've donE?
i havent been that present on teamps recently but i still check bak everyother day and i havent submitted work because i have tests as said above,

i have thoughts dotting around my head but most of them have been said above, so on a final note, dont leave teamps hangin, this community has certainly helped me, and more than likly all of you guys, mybe we just need a mass spring clean? ok um . . winter clean but u get my drift, but we also want a bit of a laugh, dont tighten ur belt to much

regards

hey yall - lots of valid points here for sure....
definitley applaud the moderators for keeping the cool around here....as much much as they can....

and yes there a certain elements of control a moderator has but by and large it would be difficult to control the 'proper' ettiquete (sp) of users, from a new to experienced... and yes a new user here may skip the rules and regulations and just post feverishly without knowing the difference...but more experienced users often make the same kind of mistake but in a different way...

and here's a simple example (not a direct one) but i often see it happen....
--------------------------------------------
Forum/ Advanced Photoshop Help : User asks: how do i do such and such........
Another User replies: oh Illustrator would be the better...blah balh
---------------------------------------------

well not to ditch Illustrator or any other prog, but the user clearly posts in a Photoshop Help forum... offer Photoshop help unless clearly stated otherwise......

as i said before its hard to dictate how a user responds, prolly best to post a sticky for each Forum Section with a brief ettique sample or guide...

just a thought

Marble for mod......repeat repeat

cheers

i just moved so i haven't been on much and i'm now posting via dial-up... *shudder*...anyways...

i suppose i fall into the category of experienced user who doesn't post a whole lot in the critique forums, mostly because of what i've seen in there in the past. i'm sure there is some quality stuff in there, or at least work that people have put a lot of time into and want good feedback on, but in the past i've felt like it was often taking me more time to write the crit than had been spent on the piece to start with, not something that's really worth my time to do. the same thing seems to happen in the ps help sections, there've been several occasions where i've given a long, detailed explanation or whipped up a quick downloadable psd to illustrate something and not gotten so much as a "thanks" from the person with the problem. again, makes it seem not really worth my time as well as underappreciated.

on giving critiques vs skill level, i think there's two sides to that. the first is that anyone, regardless of skill level, can say something relevant about a design. when i design a website i often e-mail a link to my mom and have her check it out and see if she can get around and find everything. if she can't chances are my average user won't either (my mom actually knows her stuff online). i may not agree with her when it comes to the look and feel of a piece due to style differences or conflicting points of view, but she still has something to say that i need to listen to and take into account. at the same time, when it comes to design she usually says things like "i love it" which doesn't really mean much cause she is my mom i think the same really applies on here, unless you're pointing out aspects of a piece you really like or feel have been done incredibly well "that rocks" doesn't mean much. one idea would be to require posts in the crits forums to include more than "me too" or "i love it" content and contain more detail.

as far as heathrowe's above comment about ps/illustrator type stuff, i disagree and here's why. it took me working at my first real design firm to realize how valuable illustrator was in the design world and why its needed. a lot of people on this board don't realize that and haven't ever even used illustrator, as such i consider it my job to "enlighten" a bit, if you will. on the same idea, most of my time (that's not in the misc forum) is in the 3d and miscellaneous software forums as that's where i feel i can help out quickly in many situations with my sometimes limited time.

hey fig your point is valid indeed, and we all learn something from alternative answers and work arounds...

but im referring to relevant answers to the question in the appropriate forum, as some threads tend to to go astray...

YES!!!!

I cannot stress that enough. Although it shouldn't, bad grammar and spelling really make me not want to read someone's post, and/or not look at their work. I understand that not everyone is a stellar speller, but at least TRY people!

Also, the whole "segregation" system that I mentioned before was really more of a rating or grading system, similar to Deker's proposal, although he worded it better.

Pganguly, although I haven't been to that forum, I guess one of the ways to decide if a forum is good or not, in general, is to scope out their Miscellaneous section or General Discussion and see the attitudes of the majority of the members. If most of them seem to be actual mature people, then I guess it's not a bad idea to try and mingle in with that forum. I think the perfect example of a forum where 90% of the members are immature 14 years olds would be www.gotfrag.com.
Yeah, I don't think that this forum is nearly that bad. Also, being that this forum is dedicated to just design (as it should be) no one typically posts completely useless stuff, that has no relevance to what we're all about.
