that was a great article - I have Indesign 1.5 - It came as a package with Acrobat - bought it real cheap - I guess I didn't use it as much as I should have - but I was accustomed with quark. I am an Adobe fan but indesign was kinda a let down. From what I read in that article - the CS thing might be worthy after all.

I don't do much print work anyway but some of those features sound sweet.

I learn QurakXPress at college... But now I( only use Indesign...much better... I FELL LIBERATED!!!!!!

The only things bugging me its than not all printers will take Indesign file... but in my mind if a printer does not tkae the aitional effeort to support indesign... then he does not deserve me as a client...

Imdesign let me express my creativity... much better if you have a very creative style... And typography in InDesign is much better to... This Open type stuff it blow me away...

Maybe that's why he's in marketing and not working as a designer or art director?

Actually we're small enough where our Marketing guy also does his own design work.

This article really makes me want to design magazines for a living. That would be really fun - does it pay well? What kind of overall skills do magazine people look for when hiring?

I'm at the magazine right now. :D

At the moment I am finishing up a bunch of scans, which really suck, but magazine work is my dream job. I am at the bottom of the pay scale and it still pays my bills. You need to know typography, have a sense of design, and be able to efficiently use PS, page layout program, illustration program. You need to be able to pull miracles with a budget (photos, illustrations, etc...) and you have to be prepared for a lot of frustration when working with editors. You also should know a fair amout about printing. But really, its an amazing experience. I love my job.

this is a great thread. I just had an introduction seminar to In-Design 3 the other day. I'm totally lovin' it. Can't wait to get the Creative Suite at my ad agency job. We still need to have one computer with Quark due to the amount of work we still have in Quark (which i believe ID will open up) and we still get qrk files from clients.

I agree...that if printers don't accept ID files...they are behind the times.

I've always had trouble with Quark.

Thanks again for the article Spectra!:D

Quark is over. Done with. IMO

I'm glad, too. I only have technical issues when I'm working with QXD's. I can't wait to get the CS Suite. There is really something to be said about mulitple application workflows. Quark never got that idea. Always have to switch to another app to make a Quark doc. look right. That's such a 1996 theology. People warned Quark about the way things were happening a few years ago - OSX is coming - get with it, or get left behind. Safe to say they got left behind.

to answer that question...i'm currently one of 2 designers who...with 10 more firends of ours..started a magazine (sorry for the plug..hehe) called tUNINGwERKS Magazine. we basically went into this with passion and specialized talents. we are basically learning as we go. we are currently doing this with no pay, anything we make off advertising is going back into the business.

we are counting on more advertising and branching out into other ventures to make profits. fortunately, we been having a great response to our magazine and so far it's been great. granted that i only get about 2-3hrs of sleep a day most of the time. but it's all fun and a big learning experience.

it also depends if you work for a publishing company who deals with several magazines and/or other publications, so then maybe i would see you making some decent money.

and just to tie my post into this thread....there are 2 guys (photographer and the gd) on our team that is hesitant on switching to InDesign and that's if printers accept the files and the learning curve. I want to switch now, but it's a hard sale. I'll wear 'em out eventually :D Once i get the program and show 'em it's way better.
