I'm in the same boat fellas, I hate that with a passion, especially when I'm working in Dreamweaver, working feverishly, and realize I need to edit a photo, so I click my Quick Launch Photoshop icon, and go back to Dreamweaver, then Photoshop comes on top when it's done....ooooh, that makes me mad. I found an option in the Windows XP Power Toys that says "Prevent windows from stealing focus", but that doesn't seem to be it. I'll post a message in the Microsoft Newsgroups, because this has really been driving me nuts the last few weeks...I've gotten so mad I could literally punch the monitor (even though it's not the monitors fault, he just shows me the stupid thing)

EDIT:
Found this:

EDIT 2:
Well apparently that setting I was talking about in PowerToys is the one I thought it was, it just doesn' t work. If you read the link above, it says that it works until the next reboot. I've not confirmed this, but will look into it further. I don't doubt that I forgot to uncheck the "DON'T ANNOY THE LIVING PISS OUT OF ME" button when I installed the OS this time....guess I'll have to reformat.

So it still resets that setting, or is that only when you use CuteFTP?

No D, I don't have CuteFTP installed, so that can't be it. I may have some other App installed that did it though. I need to get to the bottom of it, because I have something else weird going on also. After about 2 days, my Start Menu magically stops working. I need to go back and start uninstalling stupid shareware crap and find out what the culprit is.

One way to solve this, and mind you I'll have more info on this later, is a program that's like Mac Exposé, that more or less allows you to view certain windows at a time by allowing you to create certain 'desktops' or arrangements of windows within a given view. I think it's called panels, or something like that.

What you ultimately see is a tiny applet window on your screen with little thumbnails of the various views that you have set at a given time.

What does this have to do with anything? Well, you can make a view for each program, and when you toggle back and forth, all other windows and programs are hidden, meaning that rather than minimizing one window, or alt+tabbing, or alt+space+n, or whatever you so choose to do to switch windows, you would simply click on the thumbnail of which view you want. Also, if you open a program in a given view, it will not interrupt the active view, meaning that whichever newly opened program, if opened in it's own, or another view, will not bother your present or active one.

Thus, you could have a view for your Photoshop, e-Mail, Dreamweaver or Browser, all without either one interruptingthe other, or cluttering your desktop.

Another way I think you can fix this is when you right click on a progs icon, go to properties, and then look somewhere in there (I think under 'general') you should see an option for the type of window in which the program is opened. You can select minimized from the menu, then you can go back to it at your choosing, theoretically without interrupting your active program.

I'll try to get the name of that program. If someone knows the one I'm talking about, tell me. I don't have it but I've seen it in action. A friend of mine has it, and it's pretty sweet.

The method pganguly referred to is for the PC, this isn't a problem on the Mac, so you don't need a fix for it.

My mistake - I don't really want to change anything that could possibly cause a fatal error - its pissing me off but I dont exactly own the computer, so messing with registry keys isn't exactly for me. I know what you're talking about, pganguly - my friend has something like that. I forget what its called, but it will probably work. I just wish there was something more simple that could do the same thing.

Really it's just a viewing preference, which really won't affect any of your deeper preferences, or registry settings or dll's or anything.

It's pretty much one of those settings like your desktop background, or stuff like that. You won't have to ever mess with your registry in order to manipulate whether a program opens full screen, or minimized.

And yeah, the stuff I'm talking about is for PC, although I'm a mac user now, I do still know a thing or 2 about Windows.

This is what I was talking about.

here's an overview and description

Even if this isn't exactly what you were looking for, it's still a handy program to have.
