*cringes at MS Paint*

Maybe it he's analytical and smart he sees beyond the art. Analyzes it too much. Says "thats white paint on top of black paint in a squiggly pattern" instead of "that symbolizes two races living with each other in confusion". Like some people are much more focussed around math and science, where there is more of a definate answer, and find themselves lost in liberal arts, because they have to think in a different way. Its interesting how different people's brains work. This is an interesting look at it:

There is also a Drawing on the Left Side of the Brain, but I couldn't find any good info about that. Very interesting...

That's the exact reason; there are two different sides of the brain. I think the left deals in artistic and the right in analytical. I cant remember.

Just think of it this way. If the person can't understand art but can understand math, then he's only using half his brain. You're wasting your time trying to teach him.

I like art that makes sense. Or art that is just cool looking for the sake of being cool looking. Never understood fine art or modern art or any of that stuff. Like the things a-pek mentioned, someone that just throws paint at a canvas doesn't seem like an artist to me. Many times it seems that the real talent is making up a bunch of bull**** about why some "art" piece is so great.

But I don't really think you can teach someone to appreciate art. They either get it or they don't.

:D :D :D :D

it wasn't really about forcing this guy to like art. more like trying to make him understand why it's not pointless.

thanks for all the replies.

ask this guy if he watches professional hockey/ football/ golf or any sport for that matter and ask him to reconsider his arguement based on how rediculously overpoaid these players are????

if thats the case then he'll have something to think about by the end of the day

cheers

yeah he hates pro atheletes as well.

Personally, I think he just dislikes art. I don't think he cares about how much some artists make.

Ok, an artists salary notwithstanding, terms like 'good' and 'bad' and even talented are highly subjective terms.

One cannot unequivocally say what is and is not 'good'. Personally, I think the picture you have on your link is crap. I think the only reason some of us are being so nice about it is because you may be the one who made it. I am personally an advocate of things that look like other things, be it some type of portraiture, sculpture, or otherwise a design in which there is some insinuation that it is based upon the form of something else, and/or, has some form that makes sense within the realm of space and reality.

Thus, one cannot convince someone else that a given image is 'good', but rather they can only convincve them that it is a good example of an idea, and /or has some deeper relevance or meaning in the life of the viewer.
