Well the way I picked up on layout was by looking at other sites. See what they were using. Now I didn't steal their layout just tried to recreate it. then i tried to make it better. Most ppl will tell you the same. Other thing you can do is trial and error. You will get it done just takes time to get that right design. Be patience my son, the force is with you.

hehe,
Yeah that's a good way to learn and also just experiment around with your layouts in Photoshop until you get what you like. htmlgoodies.com is a good site if your looking to brush up on your html skills... Or you could look for some free web templates to see how those were created and play around with moving stuff around...

Can you share how you go about creating your layout? Such as, do you start by creating a picture of the layout in Photoshop and then cutting it up after? Or do you start with HTML and make little pieces of it as you go along?

Personally, I always start in PhotoShop and do the design, then cut it up in ImageReady and then do the HTML. An exception to that would be if someone was planning on inserting flash, or a crazy javascript news roller thing. Then you may want to do a little of the code as you do the graphics, to make sure everything will fit together nicely.

I only like to design some aspects of a site in photoshop. While photoshop is a very reliable graphx app, I dont feel that the combination of ps and image ready will give you all you need.

I still use notepad, though I am considering using homesite as soon as I get fundage for new apps. Graphics knowledge is great for making visually appealing sites, but HTML is always going to be required. Check out htmlgoodies.com like pank suggested. There are some very unique and helpful tutorials.

Just to clarify, I'm not suggesting that Photoshop and ImageReady be the only tools used in web design, and I'm CERTAINLY not suggesting that ImageReady be used to do any coding at all. I strictly use ImageReady to cut images and compress them. Then I put everything into HTML. And of course you can still do a lot of attractive layouts with only HTML by using interesting color schemes, etc. Also, buying a program like Dreamweaver or Homesite to make all of your pages without ever learning HTML is also not a good idea. I personally use Dreamweaver, because I see nothing wrong with using it as a tool to speed up development time in the initial stages of a layout, but I've also read several books on HTML so that I understand everything that Dreamweaver is doing, and can go into the raw code and tweak things that Dreamweaver can't handle. So anyway, my point is, to all the newbies out there, don't just buy a copy of Dreamweaver and Photoshop and expect to get the exact page you want. You still have to put the time into it and learn the code/techniques etc.

ANYWAY. I think I'm starting to get a little carried away. Sorry about that.
