a 28 page review of the Nikon D70, Nikon's answer to the Canon Digital Rebel.... I'm only a few pages into it, but so far the Nikon is cleaning up. It's a little more expensive though...

I'm sure it's a pretty good camera. Nikon's always made a quality product. But, I think we'll continue to see in the near future that photographer will always stick with their brand, and the interchangable lens features will also support that way of thinking.

I personally own a Canon EOS 10D - and I'm really happy with it. My father shot - and still does - with a 25 year old Nikon - and he loves it. I picked Canon for 2 reasons: I have 3 lenses for my film Canon - and it was pretty much my only choice last summer when I bought it.

It will be interesting to see how much of Nikon's market was lost due to them waiting so long to hit the pro-sumer niche. - Canon has already put out two digital SLRs that are under $2k... this is Nikon's first, to my knowledge.

Yet, isn't it cheaper than the Rebel?

The Nikon is $999 without a lens. The Canon is $899 without a lens.

damn it's such a great thing to be american lol - you get all the good stuff - I paid 997 euros - that's like 1200$ for my camera... and in the US it's somewhere around 600$ (was at the time)
when I think about the camera I could have bought with the same money in the US I go crazy!

I talked with a co-worker yesterday who owns the Canon EOS Digital Rebel - takes great photos, he says - however, he's hoping Canon will replace his for him - he is pretty disappointed with the overall construction - I guess all of his openings are taped shut now - battery door, CF card door, etc. only had it since November or December...

Another lesson in "you get what you pay for," perhaps?

I'm glad you posted this derek, because I was just about to buy the 300D, but I still might :/ but I'll most likely take them both for a test drive before I decide.. that nikon sure has lots of nice features tho.

Well my 5700 died recently due to a water accident, I bought myself the D70. Working / experimenting for about 2 weeks now ... I love it, althou I'm still drowning in all the configurations. IMHO it's better then the 300D, but that's just a personal thingie.

These are made with Nikons 24-120mm VR F3.5-F5.6, a good allrounder.

Remember when buying a camera ... look at the lenses of Nikon / Canon ... see which suits you the best, then buy an appropriate body
