This may or may not work for you...it's going to depend on the size of your image, the size of selection you're working with, and a few other factors... but it's the easiest way I know of to do what you are asking. Don't use a gradient at all. Instead use stroke from Layer Styles. Set it to "gradient" and also to "shape burst". Then tinker with the other settings to adjust it for your image. You should be able to get a gradient that goes from the edge of your shape and flows either to the inside or outside of it. Like so: |

thnx man but your not understanding me ..lemme give u a lil more info on what im looking for ....im using photoshop to make displacement maps for a racing game ....(tracks)....how it works is u have to use gray scale to create a map ...white bein the tallest point on the map black being the lowest....im trying to make a road going through my track ....so i need to be able to draw the road then fill it w/ a gradient going from white (top of hill) to black (bottom of hill) the road is very curvy so i need the gradient to follow the path of the road ....all i can achieve so far is the gradient going in 1 direction ...which makes the road come out angled in the corners ....i makin a lil more sense? lol plz o plz o plz man any help would be awsome ...been messin w/ photoshop several years now ...just found this site ..very nice ...thnx ....CHAINS

Well, I thought I understood. Maybe I don't. Are you talking something like this: Where the pure white is the track (highest point in the height map) and outside of the track the elevation goes down by fading to black (lowest point in the height map). Obviously something for the game would be infinitely more complex...but is that the basic idea? |

Yeah. You're most likely off. He means to say that he wants the gradient to follow the curve of the letter. So, as if you're writing an S on paper, the tip starts off dark and becomes lighter and lighter until you come to the final curve. And there's no easy way to do it in Photoshop. At least I can't think of one off the top of my head. |

Thanks !mo0chan!, now I think I understand...maybe. The only way I can think of doing that is by using a custom brush tip that fades away then use that tip to stroke a path following your course. I don't know if the results will be satisfactory for your project however. |
