I know some of you have used oscommerce. I'm thinking of jumping to a full blown shopping cart for the vbskinz.com site.

Here is my question. How does it handle digital downloads? I need it really secure and for the download to last like a year or so.

Thanks.

I hate OSCommerce. It has a lot of features, but it is a total pain in the ass to customize, and all of the markup terrible. Almost no commenting in the code, and they use variables for all of the text so it can be multi-language. It's awful. So awful in fact that for my next site I'm using the ExpressionEngine and PayPal's shopping cart instead of something like OSCommerce.

I've never used the download feature though. So I don't know how that works.

If you get a chance go here http://www.showercrafts.com/shop/catalog/

Let me know how it works. You can download the air skin for $.01

Just curious what you think. It's only a penny ;)
I still need to update the templates but I think it is functional...
Thanks.

:D just kidding

I've bought 20 different items worth US$250 from Performance-PC.com which uses the same shopping cart + Paypal. I guess if you have the patience to customize it, its pretty good.

Heh ;)
I'm just glad I actually got the digital downlloads working. It also looks like if you copy and paste the download link into a new browser it won't work. Meaning you need to be logged in to download items. Which is what I need for security. Hopefully I can monitor ip's.

And as far as cutomizing I can buy a template for like $60

Just out of interest..would you say your income from vbskinz.com is good? Is it popular and is it advertised anywhere?

Where have I been? Your link is dead... :(

Unlike Dek, I have had fun messin' with OSCommerce. I believe there is a digital download module plugin from the contributions section.

Dek also pointed me towards eShox, which involved minimal cost, but it does have digital download, and a nice simple template system. You can even switch between your templates from the admin panel. You could have seasonal themes, like, around Valentine's day you could have a Bob's Love Shack theme!!!
