matt, I think its supposed to stand for elite?

don't ask me how though..

In my opinion, people who use that kind of "speak/type/grammer" are merely stating their stupidity...

another annoying one is "all your base are belong to us"

shear stupidity..

my 2 cents

Snore, I don't know if you actually know what the whole All Your Base Are Belong to us thing is, or if you just think it's poor grammar. Just in case you don't know, it is actually taken from a video game that was very poorly translated into english. At one point there is a cutscene where the big bad guy attempts to seem tough and tell everyone that basically he's going to kick their ass, and "All your base are belong to us". And now there are actually web sites and flash animations dedicated to it.

Anyway, just in case you didn't know. Or if anyone else didn't.

And yeah, in hackerspeak, 1337 is elite. the 1 = L, 3 = E, 7 = T, etc, etc, etc. I know most people know this, just letting you know if you don't.

But I mean, if you didn't, then you are obviously not 1337, and like a total |_/-\|V|3 @$$. (lame ass)

you probably also don't play very many video games.

Its a common thing amongst quakers, tribes 2, counter strike and TF1.5.

It has nothing to do with poor grammar. It has to do with wanting to look cool. People think you are '1337' (elite) if you speak in hacker slang. Then there are the people like me who giggle at thier obvious shortcomings because they try to impress us with thier handy substitution of letters for numbers.

Well I don't play games very often (almost never), and I'm not a hacker, nor do I care to be, so I have no idea what any of that stuff is.

In my opinon, I think the world needs to get out more. Go outside for God's sake...I'm not saying you have to go play basketball or go fishing, just go outside. I don't care if you just sit out on the stoop and watch traffic go by, just please go outside. Do something besides spend 18 hours/day in front of your computer.

Another hint...get a job. If that job is sitting in front of the computer all day, that's fine, just get a job.

And hacking may have been cool 10 years ago, but the whole thing is done and over. Now it seems that every Joe, Harry, and their dogs can hack into something, so I really don't see the point in it. Lay off it for about 15 years, then start again after that and maybe it will be cool again.

I just look at some of the people around me (not here, but people in real life), and I get frustrated. Welfare, crime, etc. I see it all over, and it personally pisses me off. I know I'm getting off topic here, but I just need to vent. Right now, unemployment where I live is at like 2.5%....that may sound good, but only about .01% of those people actually have a desire to work. The rest just sit in their damn crack-house apartments, do drugs, drink, beat their children......

And the government wants to spend money to help OTHER countries....why don't we start with our own for God's sake...as a whole, this country is FAR more f**ked up than ANY other country I can think of right now.

I could go on and on and on and on....and I'm quite surprised that I got through this little (ha) speech of mine with out a lot of swearing, because right now I have about 2404 swear words floating in my head that I would have liked to put between every word of this.....OK....this is getting long......sorry for those of you who took the time to read this.

Oh, and by the way, about this country being screwed up, I was referring to the United States for you non-Americans.

People that 'hack' just to be cool, are not hackers in the first place. In fact, if you want to get technical, a 'hacker' doesn't even have to break into a computer and delete the hard drive, or even use a computer for that matter. A hacker is basically just someone that has a thirst for knowledge, and is obsessed with obtaining that knowledge. For example, someone who writes code (even non-malicious) all day, then stays up most of the night 'hacking' away at it without even realizing how long he's been there. Or someone interested in electronics that is saudering wires (or whatever it is that those people do) obsessively. Anyway, you get the idea. It's just generally used as a computer term, and even more generally used in a malicious sense. The actual term for a malicious 'hacker', should be Cracker. As they are the ones that crack computer security, copy protection schemes, etc to profit from it, or to destroy it. Whereas the hacker only wants the information. But yes, it does seem like anyone can 'hack' something today. But most of the time those are 'script kiddies' that only use pre-made cracking programs to do all the work. All they have to do is press a button, and it can break a code, crack a system, mail bomb an e-mail account, or execute a DOS attack on a web server. There is no talent or knowledge involved at all. Basically if you can run AOL, you can use programs like that. And, coincidentally, most of the kids that do that sort of thing are using AOL because they still live with their parents, and the parents won't buy them a real connection. So any kid in a 'hacker' chat room will get flamed because he is using an AOL account and because of that, obviously not 'elite'. Another term you may hear is Preaker, or Phreak. These are generally people that mess with the phone system by making little electronic boxes to do things like get free calls on a pay phone, tap phone lines, etc.

I hope you've enjoyed this crash course in the 'hacker/cracker/phreaker' sub culture.

By the way, you are really missing out on some great inspiration for web design and design in general by not playing video/computer games. There is a lot to be learned from the interface design, reward system, usability, etc, etc. There has actually been several magazine articles dedicated to the subject. Probably some books too.
