Thx for comments on my sig =) There are two reasons I use linux. 1- www.oesm.org - This is a server hosting group a former TFC clanmate and myself started. We run our webserver/mysql server and game servers off of linux. Mainly because we like having weeklong uptimes before the scheduled reboot every sunday. 2- For testing of my own websites/php/mysql database administration stuff. Mainly my own linux box on my lan is for only playing around and learning things. It doesn't even have X-Windows installed. I would never reccomend that someone use Linux on the desktop...but if that's thier perrogative, then go for it. Also, I can (if I ran xwindows) run Vm Ware and start virtual machines. Basically, on Linux, I can actually boot the Windows OS into a terminal window and run any Windows software from it. Gaming on it blows...but I can use photoshop pretty well. Then there is wine. Basically, it allows you to run windows applications inside a window. Vm Ware blows this package out of the water, but wine is free and Vm Ware is not. I use Window for all my day - to - day stuff. Email, Web, Programming, Graphic Design etc. My Linux box doesnt even have a monitor/keyboard/mouse. I can just ssh2 into the box and transfer files and perform system administration. Not bad for a pII 450 with 512mb of ram...no video, no sound...two nics. That's about it. |

vm ware rocks - one of my work mates has a dual proc 1ghz p4 and we all reckon windows runs better in the vm ware environment then it does on its own ) typical.... |
