You want ideas on WHAT to make, or HOW to make it?

How to make a interactive environments for a virtual world.

I did read something about Director, but I think I would need a program like Bryce 3D or LightWave 3D (very expensive).

I have heard you can create 2D in Photoshop and then export/import to a 3D program.

3D CG Animation can be done in a variety of programs. I am a bit lost, I normally just work with Photoshop and Illustrator. :(

I just read an article that lists these programs:

Amorphium, Art of Illusion, Poser, Ray Dream Studio, Bryce, Maya, Blender, TrueSpace, Lightwave, 3D Studio Max, SoftImage XSI, Alice, Renderman, Mental Ray and Adobe Flash (2D).

Has anyone used any of these?

Mara if you are still looking, SecondLife did release its source code as an Open Source project.

You can see their page here: http://secondlife.com/developers/opensource/

As far as the graphics used for this site, Photoshop is the program of choice for most artists there. Most of the programs you listed have just begun being used for SecondLife since they upgraded to allow sculpted object renderings.

Most textures are still created as 2d .TGA files before uploading them to the SecondLife client. Once they are uploaded into the system they become JPG2000 files.

Hope this helped, I am a bit new to the forum but found this link in passing doing research.
