Does anyone know how to create a simulated environment where users inhabit and interact in a virtual world?

I am especially interested in three-dimensional graphical representations for multiple users.

Also what type of programming language/scripting would be best suited for this type of interactive website?

Gosh that's a real complicated question, my first thoughs would be Java or Flash, but I don't know enough about either to comment on their limitations or if it would really be possible.

I'd also be interested to read other replies to this.

My first thoughts would be to check out a website kinda like this:
http://clubpenguin.com/

Is that the type of thing you are talking about? I have no idea how it would be done, but am thinking if you get some good examples maybe people can figure it out from there.

I think most of those websites are created in shockwave.
But can you share any websites so we know what you want basically?

Like Runescape or Second Life? Not really sure how they're made, but it would be interesting to know.

Yes like Runescape or Second Life, however the site would be geared towards ages 4 to 14. So there would need to be many different worlds to explore for both young and old. So something between Club Penguin and Runescape/Second Life.

Anyone have any ideas?

There's a program called Director that can be used to make games, though making virtual worlds may take a long time to make with it, if it's even possible on Director.

I think Director is a Macromedia program, like Flash and Fireworks, though I'm honestly not the slightest bit certain.
