yeah there will probably be a $100 charge from your current registrar if you want to renew it while they still have it locked. when they release it, you have no guarantee of getting it again, so it's risky to do that if you need the domain.

So if we request the current registrar to unlock it, will it automatically get transferred to the new registrar without any fees? I'm just trying to figure out where the fee applies, because we won't be renewing it with the current registrar, it'll be transferred to a new registrar.

you can't transfer it to a new registrar if it's expired, and it is expired. it's just being held by your current registrar so you can buy it back for $100.

If you wait until they unlock it, you can just register it at the new registrar, assuming no one else does it first. Which they probably will.

Your safest option is to pay the current registrar the $100, which should also renew it for a year, then make a transfer to the new registrar, which will add another year.

Alright, I have one more question and I think this should be my last here. A buddy of mine bought a domain name with a registrar, and wants to transfer it to me at my registrar. How does this process work and are there any fees involved? Will I have to pay to have it transferred to my registrar? Just wondering how that works...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again.

Cheers!

you request the transfer from your registrar. you'll have to pay a transfer fee, which will also renew it for a year. it's usually less than a new registration.

Okay I think I got this domain transfer deal. So I just plug in the request and they'll notify the guy I'm transferring from right? I'm assuming he has to give an approval from his registrar as well correct?
